 What happens when a fish is "Gut Hooked" and thrown back

Night fishing at Lake Austin a few weeks ago and a friend pulls up a nice healthy fish. Looks down and we couldn't believe the EWG hook hanging out of it! The hook was coming out of the "rear" of the fish and slightly above also. It was definitely not foul hooked. It had worked itself all the way through the digestive system. Hook wasn't rusted at all and still useable. Took the hook out and the fish swam away like nothing happened (bet it felt a lot better!)

That's amazing. I've seen a few fish over the years that needed a little helf with the final dislodging of a hook or jighead. Some fish are luckier than others.

Did you cut the hook point/barb off, then just pull out the remaining shank?

The tissue was soft enough to just reverse it out slowly
