3/28/2014, met my brother at 6am for some crappie fishing from the bank. It's a spot we like to fish this time of year cause we can sit "on the rocks" and use long poles to jig tight line for some slabs. We did pretty good, several good fish in the first 1/2 hour. The water there is about 3' deed up close to the rocks, I got a thump, set the hook and my crappie pole doubled over, the fish moved slowly away from me and never stopped. The line snapped and I never saw what it was, I'm guessing a Carp or Buffalo had taken my "Fle-Fly" and just went home with it. From that point on, no more crappie!!! We moved all over and only caught 2 more short fish by 9:30. I can't explain it but that thing spooked the crappie!!! Better luck next time!!! "thump"

If you were sittin "on the rocks" it was prolly a carp would be my guess. Ive been doing ok at a different spot, just have to be careful because its kinda "stumpy" there.
Thy will be done

Yep, thats my guess as well...since I mainly use 20lb spider wire on my crappie rigs, I have caught a few of them, generally in the forty plus range...if you can get their head turned, have enough line and your drag is not to tight, after a 15 minutes or so, you can generally tire them out bring them to the waters edge...it helps if you or your buddy is willing to get in the water to haul them out, otherwise they tend to break the light crappie type hooks as you are pulling them up on the bank...it IS exciting though!

Oh yes, it was exciting but only about 20 seconds worth though. The 6# Berkley on the crappie pole and no-drag reel was no match for that whatever. I've landed 12# plus carp on 6# Berkley before but not this day!!! "thump"

I remember a day I was fishing at OH Ivie, by the dam...had a 5ft Ugly Stick with a 500 series Shimano and 20 lb spider wire, rigged with a 3/0 gold crappie hook and a minnow....I was tight linening and talking to a guy beside me when suddenly my rod bent double and almost took me off my feet....the drag started screaming as I raised the rod to put some tension, I felt that same motion you discussed. About that time, decided to tighten the drag some, but it was tightened all the way! So I raised the rod tip some more to slow him down...SNAP..went the rod tip behind the second eye, then I looked down and saw I was almost out of line so I raised the rod up further (12 o'clock position)...SNAP..went the rod right at my hand! Desperate, I decided to crank in some line...POW...went the spool loop...then he had me spooled, so I started backing up (away from the rail)...Ka Pow went the line...and then I landed right on my arse! It was the only bite I got all day, but I can still remember it like it was yesterday...that is when I started using longer rods and larger reels for crappie fishing! It is kind of hard to forget times when a fish beats you at your game!

That's a great story crapicat, I'll bet you get goose bumps just tellin that one. I need to retire that old crappie pole. It's still a good pole, just not enough fighting power for what may happen. "thump"

On that same note of what may happen; my brother showed me a picture of a bass and a hybrid striper, both measured 24" ea. The guy who caught them was bank fishing Longhorn Park on Benbrook, fishing for crappie with 8# mono and 1/16oz jig under a float. He was able to land them cause the bank where he was fishing was free of brush so he had lots of room and line to play em out. So it's goodbye old crappie pole, hello stronger tackle!!!! "thump"

Be careful on the rocks the snakeslike them also. My friend was sitting on some rocks fishing in a cove and a person on a dock was nice enough to tell him there was a snake under the rock he was sitting on.

Oh yes, thanks zuk, I've had em crawl right up to me before. They don't bother me much, I've never been attacked yet. It does get scary at night when I can't see where I'm walking. If you step on a snake, he will likely bite you. Be careful out there!! "thump"

"thump" Yes sir, I do...Kind of like walking up on a mountain lion in the dark with no flashlight...Just CAN'T stop the goose bumps or the neck hackles from raising up when you have to re-live that scene. I see you have had a few of those adrenaline filled moments yourself!
