I'm kind of embarrassed by this question: What do you kill cranes for? Are they good eating??
Is there a special season for such?

I would have assumed that they were protected.

I guess not.

hi folks

Have a look at this page TPWD Hunting Season Dates, Grouped by Animal

I believe that y'all migbht be thinking of whooping cranes that are endangered and protected. But sandhill cranes are doing fine and have a hunting season.

Sandhill crane are not a protected species.

Taken from the TPWD waterfowl digest:

SANDHILL CRANES
Zone A: Season: Nov. 5, 2005 Feb. 5, 2006
Daily Bag Limit: 3; Possession Limit: . . . . . . 6
Zone B: Season: Nov. 26, 2005 Feb. 5, 2006
Daily Bag Limit: 3; Possession Limit: . . . . . . 6
Zone C: Season: Dec. 24, 2005 Jan. 29, 2006
Daily Bag Limit: 2; Possession Limit: . . . . . . 4

The meat is excellent fried or my favorite is to make fajitas.

It doesn't taste like chicken, its much better. Crane is made for eating. Its one of the best birds I've ever tasted!

Crane = Ribeye in the Sky. My favorite game animal to eat, hands down.

OK, now my taste buds are killing me. Where do you normally find these cranes to hunt? Do they fly low, high etc etc?

They lool like they would be pretty easy to hit?

Tastes more like tender young venison, smile
Filet out the breast meat and chicken fry
like you would backstrap. Or grill with your
favortie BBQ sauce. YUM YUM
I lived in Brownfield for a couple of
years. They winter there by the thousands.
Much harder to hunt than you would think.
Congrats young Man
