What is the best way to do this? I don't think I can get rid of all of but anything would help.

Use automotive paste wax to keep it rust resistant and it helps the wood glide over the top easier when you are cutting.

use 800 to start and then 1200 to finish, do not use coarser or you scratch the iron.

johnsons paste wax if you can find it is best for surface, 2 coats heavy after sanding.

about to do mine after it got wet moving it down here.

after I sand I put steel wool (00) on a palm sander and polish it, this helps a lot

i've never used over 220 on any of mine and they've been around for years with no scratched up surfaces...but i also do hand sanding, so probably not as rough as a palm sander...i have used a dremel with fine grain for getting inside the tracks tho...

I just got a Ryobi 10in from another TFF'r. Wiped it down with some-o-that CLR stuff. Rust came right off. Rinsed it well, dried it with the air hose and waxed it with Johnsons floor wax. Looks really good. About 20 minutes of work. I lit the wax so it was liquid and hot when I applied it.
