Mike Gleason & I helped this guy weigh the new lake record, a 15.68 Lb hog. He writes his story below. The fish was taken to Athens by Parks & Wildlife for the Share a Lunker program. I hope it made it. He didn't have a live well in his inboard/outboard so he put it on the floorboard from where he caught it to Fisherman's HQ. It must be one tough fish, because it seemed to be doing OK in the tank when I left it about 8pm.

What a tremendous early birthday present! Three days before my 43rd birthday, I was given a great present from the Chief Fisherman, a new Amistad Lake record Large Mouth Bass.

She weighed in at 15.68 pounds, breaking the old record of 15.58 pounds. At 4:48pm on Dec. 28, 2005, the "Big Lady" was caught on a Norman Lures "crank bait" DD-22 lure while in 14 to 20 feet of water. The amazing part of this is that I was fishing for Striped Bass and was pulling the lure alongside a point where the Devils River and the Rio Grande converge. The lure got snagged in a weed bed and I had to maneuver the boat near the weed bed to pull the lure free. A moment after the lure was pulled free and I was reeling it to the boat, the bass hit it and the fight was on. My youngest daughter Karen, age 12, helped net the record fish. She hit the lure about 10 feet from the boat as the lure was coming up from the bottom of the weed bed.

We drove her to Fisherman's Headquarters on Hwy 90 West and she was placed in a tank with bait fish. Then, we called the Texas State Parks and Wildlife folks. She was transported by Rick Rickman of San Marcos, Texas to the Apache Meat Market where she was weighed by Fernando Chapa on his certified scale #154908, and she weighed in at 15.68 pounds. The bass was then returned to the tank at Fisherman's Headquarters until Dick Luebke of Texas Parks and Wildlife arrived and took possession of her.

An awesome and unexpected gift!

Tom Sutherland

What a fish!

But is it just me, or does that bass have odd eyes...?
