That's a Green Sunfish. Large mouths, very aggressive, not usually very big. An 11 incher may have been a state record lol.

It looks like a warmouth, or as I would have called it when I was a kid, a goggleye.

Nah, it's definitely a Green Sunfish. The body shape and mouth size are similiar to that of a Warmouth, but the colors are all wrong. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish/species/sunfish/grn.phtml There's the TPWD page for Green Sunfish. And here is the page for Warmouth, as you can see, the colors are totally different. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish/species/sunfish/war.phtml Robert, what you caught was definitely a green sunfish. Also, the one you have pictured is about the average size, they tend to stunt out easily.

This pond I fish has a ton of them in there. the 11 inch one swallowed a full size fluke with a #5 gama hook.
are they good to eat? I can catch these pretty regular and most are this size or better.
thanks for the info.

Still can't see 'em, but to answer your other question, any sunfish is good eatin' from what I've found...Green sunfish and redears (shellcrackers) are the best IMO cos they're thicker bodied (and thus a thicker fillet). @ 10-11", you better clean 'em up, cos them is some good eatin' fillets right there!
No fish is too good for the grease.

That is a Green as has been stated. They are scrappy little guys and great to eat if you can catch enough and big enough one. I have a creek I catch em out of in the 9 inch range at times. I would not eat anything from that creek but they are still fun and about as agressive as anything in the water.
I have two in a fish tank with some other sun fish and some bull heads. They own the tank! I will put in a few dozen netted minnows and it is a slaughter!
