According to this it only applies to trailers that weigh over 4500 lbs. it's much like the laws for titling trailers. Under the weight and they don't have titles, just registration.

Only has to be inspected the first time it is registered. May change? but that is my experience, registered a 29' about eight years ago and all is well since. b

If I'm not fishing or hunting I'm hunting a place to fish or hunt.

It's dependant on GVWR, not empty weight. There are other requirements too; brakes, lights, reflectors. All tied to the GVWR.

I ran an inspection shop for years in Texas. In 10 years of doing inspections, all kinds, safety, safety and emissions, Motorcycle and trailer, Commercial, D. O. T., and so on. The only light duty trailer inspections I did was 3 or 4 of them on trailers just brought in from out of state. That is light duty trailers, under 10,000 lbs. For personal use. Heavy duty commercial inspections, I did a ton of. Probably should check with D. P. S. To be sure.

Your lucky in Hawaii we have to get a safety inspection every year car and boat trailers. Around $20 as I recall. Except this year on the saltwater boat trailer got some fishing line wrapped around the wheels and broke both seals so all the bearings had to be replaces. Also had to replace all the wiring and trailer lights. Needed new tires too. Then discovered we needed to rewired the lights on the boat, and replace the bilge pump. LOL. Close to $1000 to get an inspection this year.

I have never had my boat trailers inspected in 30 years of owning various boats.

In 2008 I bwent to Missouri to pick up my 911. Brought it to Texas and went to tax office to register trailer, and pay sales tax, no inspection. Went to TPWL to register boat, no inspection.
