I was on Facebook earlier and saw a picture jimmy houston posted about how to texas rig, and it got me thinking.

I have always used a wide gap hook on t-rig and he was using a round bend hook, which i have never even bought.


What do you guys use? Round bend or EWG hooks?

Round bend on worms and lizards ewg on everything else.

Both. Depends on the thickness of the bait. Mostly roundbend for worms.

I like the sproat hooks for worms. I prefer straight shank hooks vs the offset for most worms because the worm is straighter and the angle of the hook is better for hook sets. I will use an offset for power baits and lizards, and an EWG for Senkos and various creature baits, or sometimes a flipping hook depending on conditions. I think the main thing is having an arsenal to chose from and not limiting myself to just one hook type. They all have their advantages.

When they're biting anything works but:

Straight shank round bend with a worm like a 2/0 for a finesse worm and say a 4/0 for a 10 incher or a brush hog.

Look at a senko bait or a fluke with a 3/0 offset worm hook, is the best.

The wide gaps are for wide baits like a thick tube or a larger plastic swimbait. I've tried them but they are overkill for a lot of baits.

I use a #1 cirlce hook for drop shot or wacky so 4-5 hooks is the most I carry.
