I've never been a big Sammons fan, but that definitely gave me more respect for him. I've seen his shows...just not my thing. Nice enough...very skilled....and has some big ole brassy ones....just not my thing. Good for him for standing up for whats right.

I think they should just make it mandatory like they do in boats, forget the size of boat or kayak any size while your on the water PFD must be on.

It's not mandatory on boats.

I don't think it should be mandatory. I can't imagine going out with my friend who has a sail boat for a nice evening sail...maybe a few cocktails for everyone but the captain...and were all sitting around relaxing with our PFD's on.

Passengers on a motor boat are not required to wear PFDs while onboard except if they are younger than certain age. However, there must be enough PFDs for each passenger.

I pulled a young teenage boy out of the water 2 hours ago at Purtis Creek. He was in a Pelican 8 or 9 ft sit-in and next thing you know, it was full of water and he was outside of it. Fortunately he had a PFD because he was at least 300 yds from the bank. Chilly water too.

There's an acronym in the motorcycle community AGATT which stands for All Gear All The Time. Good policy to kayak by as well in my opinion. Good for Sammons.

I agree we don't need more laws, but having guys who are in the spotlight like Jim taking stands like this just sets a good example for everyone, particularly kids. I've had a good number of kids comment on my videos or send me messages that they love my videos or whatever, and because I have that audience, I always wear my PFD, even when I'm in a foot of water down on the bays and flats. Is it uncomfortable and in the way sometimes? Sure. So is a seatbelt. But is my life and potentially the life of some impressionable kid worth more that tiny inconvenience? It isn't a question in my mind. Good for Jim. He isn't screaming for more laws, he's asking the experienced people in our sport to set the tone for the newcomers, and I respect him for it.

I know one thing, I've never heard of anybody who got killed because they were wearing a PFD, but certainly the opposite.
