[censored],

Was hoping they'd get down here. Seems like the more I look into them the more positives I see.

Just like the dreaded hydrilla that we must all kill with fire on site

My buddy said the same thing, only on a crank.

Hopefully it works, but it doesn't sound like this scientist is going to get to cash in on possibly a great discovery

I hate how milfoil and zebra mussels are portrayed in such a negative light "invasive". Yea they mess up stuff in the great lakes but the filtering benefit outways the costs by far. When I lived in MN they made a big deal about both. As far as I'm concerned both improve the habitat and bass fishing signicantly. And to me thats a very good thing. They need to focus on flying carp and snakeheads and stop wasting taxpayer dollars trying to prevent the spread of things that actually help the ecosystem.

How is filtering nutrients out of the water beneficial?

The giant small mouth sacks in the Great Lakes would be my first clue.

That area used to be a waste dump.

Fouzman, From the evidence I've seen they dont suck all the nutrients and suffocate the body of water. They filter all the [censored] and pollution. Keep the water from turning rancid. The benefits faaaaaar outweigh the costs. And make for a much healthier ecosystem. The DNR is like mainstream media. Can't believe everything we hear.

Exactly 90 5.0! If you have the luxury of fishing up north in lakes that have them, they make for great bass fishing.

I don't think they filter any nutrients out of the water. Any nutrients that were taken out would remain inside the mussel or crapped out the other side. They are a food source for crawfish, perch, small mouth, and catfish.

I agree they do more good than harm. The only reason they are considered negative in the south IMO is because big corporations don't like them clogging up their water pipes. That and it can mess up boats that don't ever get used.

You guys need to do a bit more research on what a zebra muscle is. Look up psuedofeces, macrophyte bacteria, dissolved oxygen and phytoplankton biomass where they are present, then get back to me. I'm well aware of the benefit to the yellow perch in Lake St. Clair and the smallmouth in Lake Erie. The muscles did a good thing for the inland fisheries up there, because they were highly polluted. Ours are not. Zebras will cause much more harm than good. And remember, TPWD is not responsible only to the fisherman. They are responsible to everyone who uses the resources of this state.

You have anything to substantiate that? Their only natural predators in the US are birds/cranes. And since they store toxins in their flesh, large-scale predation has resulted in the death/near extinction of several bird species in the Great Lakes. Try to think on a macro-economic scale, not just a fisherman's.
