Have you ever had a vehicle stolen? How about a kayak? Have you ever wanted to know where your car is, especially when your teenager borrowed it? How nice would it be to go to the location where your items are with the police in tow?

At a recent outdoors show I found just such a device. Secure Outdoors (secure-outdoors.com) makes a couple of different devices that can track an asset. Unlike previous devices, this one doesnt have to be tied to the item. If you want to track your truck and make sure it doesnt get stolen you can do that. Lets say you buy a new Pro Angler and want to make sure it doesnt leave your tailgate at a WalMart. Simply move the device from the truck to the PA and youll know if it moves.

Derk Arnold of Secure Outdoors was intrigued when I mentioned tracking kayaks at the show and wanted me to try it out. With the MT300, I have made several trips, several stops and even left it parked for a few days to test battery life.

So what is the verdict?

The price is what breaks the deal. If they could get it down to like $150 or less it would probably catch on with the regular crowd.
It probably will come down as technology progresses.

The price will come down as the cell service prices come down most likely. It's prepaying for two years of cell service and the equipment that makes it that high. $450 is up there for lots of folks. $250 is much more manageable for more folks. If you get a truck, atv, trailer or expensive kayak stolen, many will wish they had it. Not sure $150 would be doable in the next 10 years but who knows.

Yeah, I just threw that $150 out there, but guys pay more than that for trail cameras and fishfinders so $250 wouldn't be a bad price to pay for some pretty good insurance to get your property back.

That's assuming you're always with your gear (truck, kayak, atv, etc)

do you know what the battery life is once the alerts start rolling in? say your vehicle/yak is taken and you start getting alerts every 2 minutes; is there a way to assure the battery will last long enough to track the perp who took my goods?

Hello all, just wanted to jump on and say hello and introduce myself to the kayak crew. I would like to say thank you to Payne's Paddle Fish for the write up and the post here in the Kayak section and to you guys for taking the time to read up about our products.

General Jigs: The battery life on the MT300 is about 10-14 days give or take a day either way on 2 minute reporting. The alerts will only come on the events you would like to receive alerts on. So if you want all the alerts you would receive motion started, Geo fence exits and enters, motion parked, SOS/Panic and low battery life at 20%. All these events and Alerts can be turned on/off with a click of a button in your portal. These alerts will only come in to your phone via text and e-mail when they happen. The units are also able to be configured for 2,5,15 minute and 1 hour pinging. What does that mean? It means it will send a location ping of your device to your tracking portal based on one of those configurations. We also have a water proof pelican case with its own rechargeable internal battery pack that will run the unit for 6+ months on a single charge.

2 minute - 10-14 days
5 minute - 18-21 days
15 minutes - 26-30 days
1 hour - 46-50 days
These are approximate run times on a single charge based on how many times the unit pings in an hour and how active the asset is the client has it tied too. Hope this helps answer your questions. Please feel free to give me a call or e-,ail me if you have any other questions.
