I use this instead of a crate. Its a dog food container from Petco and its water tight. I mounted a handle on the top and rod holders on the side. I can strap it in my yak and keep my gear inside or leave it loose because it floats if I turtle.

Finally, took my PA14 on maiden voyage around Marine Creek yesterday. The trip started interesting enough...for starters, be sure to develop a system of "checks". On the way to Marine Creek, I used a Harbor Freight trailer to transport my yak. Unknowing to me, while coming down 820 fwy, I had left my trailer jack stand wheel down. I got pulled over by an officer who was cool enough to warn me about it and offer me a fix for what was left of my burnt trailer jack stand wheel. And if you hear noises while traveling down the fwy with a trailer...be sure to check. Be sure to 3x check your trailer before rolling down a Hwy (do it like Lionel Richie says, "once, twice 3 times a lady...". On the subject of PA14 maiden voyage, I realized the importance of its overall weight and now I'm going to decide on gear that I really need. I saw my 2 buddies with limited gear on yak and they moved around effortlessly when needing gear on yak. Yes, with the PA14 you'll have plenty of room for gear but, "what good is all that gear if you don't need it or use it"?! Secure everything down before getting in water. I lost a milk crate with a lot of expensive gear. Milk crate should've had some type of floatation device mounted on it. My flag pole (w/ expensive flash light) too should've wrapped a floatation device around it. I also lost a Calloway golf ball retriever (DIY stakeout pole). Oh yeah...and 6 DIY rod leashes. Lesson learned: "if you value it...secure it all down, develop a system of checks and balance before departing and leaving, take your time when getting ready to get in water, Protect your Investment". If y'all have any other lessons learned from Yakking, please post I just wrote down everything that happened to you and using it as check list...

here's one I've done a few times. I have my rods in vertical tubes, on my crate. I paddle under a dock, and hear my 6 rods catch, snap, scrape, pop, and almost break, when hitting the bottom of the doc. Luckily my crate is bungeed down to where it can roll back against the bungees, and I haven't broken any rods. I've done it on one dock, and then again, on the very next dock. I have the instant realization, terror, and regret, when I hear the rods hit the doc. I know it's about 1,000 bucks down the drain.
like the man says...if you're swimming in the ocean and get bitten by a shark, its not a shark attack. You're in THEIR neighborhood. If you're at home in your shower, turn around and a shark is in there with you...THAT'S a shark attack

The important thing here is that you learned a couple valuable lessons. And that I had a good laugh or three.

Here's one ill never forget. I had just bought some Corky's and was very excited to try them out. I bought two floaters and two sinkers but I couldn't remember which were which as they were the same color and basically look the same. So I thought to myself, just set it in the water and see if it floats or sinks. Keep your hand under it so it doesn't get away. Just about the time I do just that a wave washes the Corky away from me and guess what, it was a sinker. $5 just washed away!
