Took my niece and nephew fishing again. Reds and catfish seem to be biting. The catfish ate a rattle trap of all things. Reds came on 5-6 inch live shad fished 12ft down under balloons..

That red on the right had a total of 32 spots 16 on one side 16 on the other.. My buddy Roy last year cuaght a Red out of that lake that had 61 spots on it.. Looked more like a Speckled Trout than a Red fish..

Slot on redfish is 20 -28 inches.. There is no maxium length at Calaveras.. IF it is cuaght at the coast anything over 28 has to be tagged with a redfish tag..

Gator, the reds at fairfield feed during the day, you are just fishing the wrong spots or using the wrong bait! Most of the reds I have caught from fairfield have come in the heat of the day or early morning. The evenings are great if using live bait or bottom fishing but artificials will usually catch you quite a few reds in the day. Traps work best either cast or jigged. Nice fish redfishon. I grew up fishing calaveras and I wish it wasnt so far from me. From the looks of it, it looks like you have a good drive to get to Calaveras. You in austin? I was in SanAntonio when I fished the lake. Nice fish and congrats. Were you on the crappie wall? Is there still a ton of people out early trying to snag big tilapia? There use to be tons of those guys walking up and down the wall with trebles trying to snag the tilapia feeding on the side of it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks PiePuncher, I must be fishing the wrong places. I think I'll try down by the dam next time with live bait.

Nope no one snags anymore the commercial fishermen have put a hurtin on the Tilapia. I see guys out there with 10-14ft cast nets.. The hole front of there boat stacked 2ft deep in Tilapia.. I havent been to Fairfield yet but Calaveras/Fairfield seem to be about the same distance from my house so maybe I will give it a shot.. Yeah the crappie wall is hot right now thats where these fish came from. Come Aug/Sept they school up big time by the 4-6 light on the damn and they seem to be bigger 33-39 inches.I am going to Port A in July hope to post some monster Trout/Red pics opon return. PiePuncher you seem to be one of the few guys that gives exellent advice and knows his trade; one of these days will have to hook up at Fairfield.. I grew up in San Antonio too so Calaveras is my old stomping ground. Rip some lips and stay cool..

Hey I drive to Calaveras and Braunig all the time from Round Rock. I am sure you know, but Calaveras is 107 miles one way. That's a nice looking Blue Wave.
