bought a 7'6" Veritas MH and paired it with a Revo STX. Upon further inspection the rod says 1/2-1-1/2 oz lures. I've been trying to cast 3/8 oz traps and cant get any distance. I thought it was the reel but I've adjusted the reel a 100 tines. I'm using 17 lb fluro. Would this rod make a decent umbrella rig rod with braid or should I throw bigger baits? Expert advice please.

You'd be better off using a 7'3" medium action for your traps, that rod should be ok for a light umbrella rig but most umbrella rigs weigh more than 1 1/2 oz. I would use that rod for a frog or a heavier jig imo. Does your reel have internal, centrifugal brakes? That might be something to check out too.

those veritas are under rated on stregth. a MH fishes more like a H. You need a medium or ML to fish a rattletrapcrankbait. i use a 7'6"MH to throw a frog or A-rig. Nobody wanted to buy it when I sold off a lot of cheapo rods.. so I just kept it since it doesnt get used much.

I bought the same rod a couple of years ago on a trip and needed a quick fix for a frog rod. Couldnt cast a frog accurately and it was driving me crazy. Went back to the store and exchanged it for the exact same rod. That rod was "normal" and a great deal for $99. I tried to explain to my friend that the first rod must have been built (guide placement to spline) off spline at an adverse angle or something. He thought I was crazy but there really was a big difference in the two rods.

3/8's trap needs a Med action rod. I throw 5/8-3/4 on a 7'11' Crucial rod all the time and can throw it two coutry miles. Also try switching to 15-20 lb braid for a 3/8 trap. Bait will have more vibration. With lipless baits it's more of a reaction bite on a faster moving bait so line visibiliy is not really an issue and is great for ripping it out of grass. Just a suggestion on the line but for sure a med action rod for any bait under 1/2 oz. I got schooled by an Elite Series pro one day on this very subject and it has paid off great for me for many years now.

Is it the "winch" model for cranks? If so I throw the strike king 1.5's (3/8oz) and the larger 5-6XD's regularly without any trouble from that rod and a lews reel. Also would think the winch model's tip is a little too soft for an A-rig..

Its the rod. Get a medium action rod and then open the side plate on that STX, turn all the brakes off (push them towards the middle of the reel) then pick 2 straight across from each other and push them back out. Last use the outside dial on the STX to fine tune the end of cast braking.

Many thanks for all the good advice. I think I'm going to get a fiberglass cranking rod in the 7'-7-3" range to solve this issue.
