My best, and longest time drifting buddies, Dewayne and Nick, came out with me yesterday and we had a banner day drifting flats in 25 FOW using cut drum for bait.
Some of the very first fish caught were nice CPR blue cat fish.
Nick scored first and got his new PB a 26 pound blue cat fish, then his dad got a 15 pound blue cat.
I put a 22 pound fish in the boat for CPR, then it just got crazy.
I can't remember when what was caught, but one of the new custom cat fish rods was getting slammed down in the Bee Ready's left and right.
Somewhere in the fray Dewayne caught this.
A very hard fighting 37# high fin blue cat fish, this cat was worthy of a title like "King Fighter" or something. When Dewayne could get the rod out of the holder, he rared back with the 7' 9" stick and slammed him, only to get jerked forward a little, I could see it on his face.
He was about to say "I got a log" when the big cat shook his head.
Then the fight was on, unlike 90 percent of the big cats over 20 pounds caught on the boat it never came to the top out a ways from the boat and splashed around some before diving back down.
This one never came up from the bottom after it could get back down the first time. Which was at least forty yards from the boat.
Dewayne got it to the boat, but it was 25' down scrapping the bottom, while Dewayne stood at the bow walking around with it, while it made tight figure eights for a long time. It would come a little after a lot of pressure, then dog it's way back down.
Finally and slowly Dewayne got it up and we netted it.
37# and some change, still not Dewayne's PB, but next to it I believe.
The cat was 40" long.
We CPRed the big guy and kept on.
Nick soon bested his recent PB with a 33# blue cat fish 39" long
I got a 27# blue cat fish.
There were a lot of box cats between 7# and 15#.
In all we caught six blue cats over twenty, (two of which were over thirty, and one of which was over 35 pounds). On inspection two of the 7 pound cats were big channel cats.
With the box cats we caught about 17 fish total.
We kept nine that made for some beautiful fillets once trimmed up right.
Nothing like having a really good day with good friends drifting for big blue cats!
