I was at the BPS in Katy the other day and, as I have been following the Onix's development, I finally got to actually play with one. One of it's selling points (to me) is it both has touch screen and buttons. I tested it against the Lowrance 12" in the touch screen mode, it wasn't even close. To me, it was the combination that had me leaning towards Humminbird. I realize that many have talked about the problems in the field for having a "just touchscreen" unit but, in touchscreen mode ONLY, there was NO comparison.
The response time in touchscreen mode on the Onix was slow beyond redemption. The salesperson tried rebooting it several times (which in and of itself is SLOW). So, if touchscreen speed is important to you, the Onix is very disappointing.

There's a guy who bought one and is posting about it in the general equipment.

Thanks. I saw his initial post but haven't looked at it again.

Information like this is exactly what a forum is for. Thanks for the heads up!

Hmmmmmmm.....good information. I hadn't even heard of it, but.....sounds like LOL, I sure haven't missed anything. Is it priced much below the Lowrance ?

Price between the Lowrance and the Onix is not appreciably different. It gets down to a choice between what is more important to you. The main knock on Lowrance has been it was touch screen only. The Onix has both which was supposed to be the big deal BUT, (at least in sim mode) the Onix is terribly slow. The first sales guy exposed another bad point by rebooting it. That was painfully slow. On another thread this was confirmed by a TFF member who actually has an Onix.
The problem with anything like this when its a new model is the only reports we get about it when it first comes out is that they come from people who have a financial interest in them. It's not until consumers have it that we learn what trade offs we have to make.

Didn't the other post say it was slow in demo mode? How about actually functioning?

Didn't the other post say it was slow in demo mode? How about actually functioning? Yes it did. As of his last report he hasn't said how it is on the water yet. The guy at BPS said the Lowrance had twice the processing power as the Onix. I doubt he has a dog in the hunt since he sells both.

He had to send it back to bird, it is defective. He has a full write up on a BBC. So far the SI & DI looked good but his sonar was a horrid looking mess!
