Hello all,

I'm renting a house for Spring Break about 1/3 mile upriver from Lake McQueeney, and would love to get my two boys on a fish or two. They will be fishing from the dock (no boat or yak), and I would love some pointers if you wouldn't mind. I don't know the river at all, and they would be thrilled with catching anything.

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

For that stretch id go for some cats with bobber and punch bait. Fish close to your dock for perch using bits of worm on the smallest hooks you can find. It has some quality bass in it but i dont know much bout bass fishing.

Years back, Lake McQueeney had some of the best Guadalupe Bass fishing in the state. Charlie Brewer Slider worms and grubs, soft plastic craws and small baitfish colored topwaters will do the trick.

Thank for your reply Bobcat. I'll pick up some punch bait for the trip. Any suggestion on how deep I go with the bait: just off the bottom, suspended in the middle, closer to the top, etc.?

Thanks to you too, Jagg. I've got the topwaters and worms, but I'll puck up some plastic craws so I'm covered.

If you are able to cast net some big shad you can cut them in half and possibly catch a big blue cat. Also, if you bring a submersible light and car battery you may be able to catch some crappie and bass from the dock. Turn it on right before dark and let it run for a while. Once the bait shows up it's go time! Minnows would be your best bet but jigs may work. There is a bar on 725 that sells minnows. It is directly across the street from Ski Lodge road.

If you have access to the pier a couple days ahead of time or even the night before, go to the local feed store and pick up a sack of 20% range cubes. Be sure to ask for 20% protien range cubes because they will sink and not float away on the surface.
Take a coffee can and spread a couple can fulls around your dock.
You can feed heavier if you do it ahead of time because if you feed too much before you plan on fishing the fish will fill up on the cubes which you don't want. You just want enough out there to draw them in to your bait.
I would fish the Big Marv's punch bait using a #6 trebble hook and just a simple large split shot about 14" up from the hook. Drop the bait at the side of the pier and let the bait sink to the bottom then reel up about one to two turns off the bottom. No need to cast it out there unless the water is just too shallow right at the pier. When you get a bite you'll know it and feel the tap or tug, and set the hook.
The range cubes will also lure in the small minnows and thus the bluegills, and crappie as well, so a tub of worms or live minnows may net you a nice mess of panfish as well as some cats.

Awesome tips from everyone, I really appreciate it. I can already hear my wife, "What's all that stuff for...?"

McQueeney is well know for big blues. Carolina rig with 5/0 circle hook & a thumb size slice of chicken breast & cast it out.
Have fun during your stay...access to that Lake is protected (boat or bank)
