Working on a daytrip to the Brazos below PK dam next week - last time I was there was 25+ years ago on a Boy Scout canoe trip and I'm looking for any words of wisdom on parking, access to the river, wadeability, etc.

The map shows 'Garland Bend Road' parallel the river - is there river access from the road or is that all private property?

Thanks for your help -

You can put in a hwy 16 I would suggest hwy 4 there's place that rents canoes and kayaks and they will pick you up down river depending on how far you want to float but either place would be fine don't know how good the river is flowing definetly wil want some waders for the low water areas where you have to drag your canoe this time of year

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I think Rochelles is still there, you can rent you stuff there, and they will pick u up. I would go down river from there. good luck, I suggest take a partner.

This is the gauge you want to watch for this stretch:

It needs to be flowing at 100 or higher before I would float it.

100 would make for a very nice "float". However despite several dozen trips I think I can count on one hand the number of times the wind died down enough to allow the current to push you down stream and several of those were after dark! LOL

Probably almost no portage in the stretch between PK and Mineral Wells. I've been on the river at 200 and down to 13. Up around 200 you start seeing some real class 2 rapids. Below 30 and you will be doing quite a bit of walking, but the fishing can be easier as they are concentrated. 20 is more walking than paddling and the lowest I have been on the river was 13 and that was pure misery.

We need some rain in a bad way. PK is down 13+ feet and is only about 65% full. I really want to hit the sandbass on the brazos weekend after next, but without some serious rain, I probably won't do it.

Last time I crossed 16 a week or so ago there was almost no flow in the river. People say the trout are dying do to the lack of water coming out of PK. The lake is down almost 14 feet and we face another drought year.

If you go, better be prepared to paddle / drag a canoe.

I floated it at the end of June last year and it was flowing at around 240, guy at Rochelle's said he hadn't seen water like that in years. The rapids were a bit interesting at that rate for sure. We didn't have to drag at all, too bad it didn't last long...definitely need rain in the upper Brazos watershed
