Up for sale is a MINT condition Sage Z-XL 490-4 rod (9 foot 4 weight 4 piece)with a matching Sage 4230 reel in bronze.

The rod retailed for $695 and has only been fished a handful of times. Less than 5 in fact. There isn't one single blemish or nick on the rod. Other than the very slight wear on the cork, the rod looks brand new. Cloth case and aluminum tube included.

The Sage 4230 is also mint. Fished with it one day. It is a brand new reel for this year and currently sells for $289. I have the box, neoprene case, and all of the original paperwork with it.

The rod (in my opinion) is a great one for fishing for trout. It has the finesse to throw delicate dry presentations, and the backbone to throw weighted nymph rigs. When I used it I landed a 21" rainbow on the LMF river and had plenty of power to spare, and it made catching smaller fish more fun (which isn't the case with a 5 weight). The Z series by Sage is still one of the most sought after rods ever produced, and this one is immaculate.

I hate to let these two go, but with a new baby on the way, I figured it's time to part with some of my rigs.

Asking $595 for the combo, and the price is firm.

I live in Frisco, work in Lewisville, and would be willing to ship if the buyer covers freight.

is the reel spooled with 4wt line or empty? Can you use 5wt line with it?

The reel is empty. BUT...If the buyer pays $620 I will throw in Rio Gold WF4F line that is new in the package. That's a $75.00 line.

That should solve your line problem, but I would not recommend lining up with this rod. It is a medium-medium fast action rod and 5 weight line might bog it down. I used Rio Gold WF4F on it when I used it and that was a perfect match.

If Golfer Jeff was asking specifically about the capacity of the reel, I'd bet he could load five weight line on it, just with less backing.

Yes, the reel could hold 5 weight line with about 40-50 yards of backing.

I had over 80 yards on it with room to spare with the 4 weight line.

The reel is 3.25" in diameter and is a true large arbor.

The ZXL is a awesome trout rod. I fish the 8'6 4wt with Rio Gold and it's sublime. That's at great price for a high end rod from Sage. Much like the XP series that will never die. Good luck with the sale.

Jeff is the lucky winner.

Thanks to all for the consideration. My only hope now is that Jeff will let me fish it from time to time.

Per Brad, My only hope now is that Jeff will let me fish it from time to time. I will give you a 'going away' drift or three on the LMF and you can use it if we hit the Provo, South Platte, or San Juan this fall wink

Yeah, I got a good deal and Brad got a new bassinet or crib!
