The NMEA 2000 is the "hub" that allows you to link Lowrance products.

An ethernet cable is the gray cable with yellow tips that you use to connect Lowrance unit to a side imaging box (LSS2) or link one unit directly to another.

Tell us what units you have and what you're trying to do and we will try to help you out.

I haven't bought any units yet. I have an older lowrance unit at the console and I was thinking of moving it to the front and buying a new HDS unit. I just couldn't figure out how lowrance networked their stuff.

In simple form....NMEA will share "simple" data, things like water temp, speed, gps location and literally hundreds of other things. NMEA is an "open source" protocol and you can literally hook up a NMEA device from any manufacturer. For example, you can use a Garmin GPS antenna with a Lowrance sonar.

Ethernet is for higher bandwidth applications, for sharing things like sonar, map card data, video, etc.
