Drive shaft broke and three gears need to be replaced in lower unit. 2350 is the estimate but that's with refurbished parts. Thoughts on the refurbished parts? One of the first things the mechanic said was this is gonna be expensive and I might want to file this with insurance. I just wonder if he wants me to file with insurance and make more money since its refurbished parts. What do y'all think? Is that price reasonable?
He said he would do all new OEM parts in the lower unit and would replace the housing with a re-used housing but would make it like new. Price 2395 with one year warranty
Or he priced a new lower unit for 3750.
Thoughts? Take it elsewhere?

2002 mercury, efi 225
That's exactly what I was thinking as well, why not check about a new lower unit.

Refurbished parts would be a NO for me, no way i'd gamble $2300 on used parts going back in a lower unit. I'd check with Chuck @ Service Marine 903-473-3909 and see what a new Mercury lower unit would cost, then i'd consider NEW after market parts, and last i'd get a SEI.

I don't know what refurbished means with respect to lower unit parts. They can check them for wear and pitting but if someone had to do anything to the part I would throw it in the scrap heap. I'm guessing they are saying used parts. Good if you know the guy who's doing the looking. Bad if you don't.
You can find good lower unit parts but you need someone who knows what they are looking at.
When you can find them you should be able to buy a good 3.0 liter lower unit for around a grand.

Unit #1: Mercury 3.0L Servicemaster (standard) lower unit with 20 driveshaft. The lower unit came off of a 20 225Hp 3.0L EFI. This lower unit does not have the low water pickups in the nose. This lower unit has a standard diameter shaft (not a fat shaft). The unit has been pressure tested, new water pump and has new synthetic gear lube. $600 plus shipping.http://www.bbcboards.net/motor-parts/452339-two-mercury-not-aftermarket-3-0l-lower-units.html

Refurbished nice way of saying used. Call your insurance company and let them handle it that's why you have insurance to start with.

Not for something like that. The labor will be a lot. Makes no sense to take a chance with a used part if it will be labor intensive to install. It could end up costing twice as much if the part fails and you certainly won't save 1/2 on the repair......because of the labor.
Seems a little high........like almost the cost of an entire lower unit. You should find out how much it cost to replace entire lower unit.

First he said he would do it with used parts for $2350 now with new parts $2395? Unless you stand there and watch him, you really have no idea what he is putting in the lower unit. I don't think I would trust him, and would find a reputable dealer if it was mine.
