Besides shad. Everyone knows that shad is the best, but I am having some difficulty procuring some fresh shad. I can have an obnoxious amount of live or fresh cut bream instead. Do you think bream will work?

Fresh caught carp or buffalo. If you cant find any, go to fiesta and buy buffalo up their. I like to soak the buffalo from the store in Dead Red by Team Catfish and anything caught fresh to use as is.

Ive heard the bream work better during spawn as the bream often steal ol'mrs. whiskers eggs therefore making the whisker family hostile towards the bream.....or so ive heard.

Not better than cut shad or buffalo/carp just better time to use bream if you are going to use it.

I always use bait shrimp and i have had fairly decent success with them. That being said my wife left the other day to go get groceries and my son and left to get a QFF(quick fishing fix) before we had to help unload groceries. With no time to get bait we grabbed some smoked ham lunch meat out of the fridge. Caught 3 yellows, a 16 inch and 20 inch blue in a matter of 25 mins before i got the"where are you?"call.

I would rather catch fish and starve then be full and not catch fish.

The best bait is always the freshest bait, yes they do hit other stuff pretty regularly
but fresh is indeed "best" IMO.

I have caught some nice blues with cut perch at times--
It is just another choice but to answer you Yes, if you can get fresh perch it is sometimes a good bait.

I caught 3 on cut perch Saturday. It was all I could get, so I used it. They ate the middle cuts with the guts in it.

Perch heads and perch fillets, cut chunks of carp/buffalo and drum, black salties, chicken breast soaked in dead red, I've had good luck on all of these when I don't have fresh shad, I just started using chicken breast within the last couple of months but I have been doing good on them.

I have had good success on cut perch, especially on trotlines. You can't beat fresh cut shad though.

If you can find sucker fish (redhorse or spotted) and river carpsuckers, they will likely be a close second to shad as these are very oily and slimy (much like shad)
