Don't laugh. I'm 63 years old. I used to catfish with my Dad back in the day. We always used trot lines in small lakes and typically used either chicken livers or blood as bait.
I live at Texoma and just rigged up some jugs. Used a lot of information found here to make 'em.
For you guys who do jug lines, what is the best bait? Chicken livers or frozen beef blood good choices?
Thanks in advance.

A popular choice for jugs is to use hot dogs cut into two inch slices.

I have had plenty of luck with bream and livers. Go to the craft section of Walmart and get some little elastic thread. Wrap it around the liver while it's on the hook 4 or 5 times and it won't come off. I just got some of Stubby's bait and I'll be trying it next chance I get.

Running jugs you need fresh live or cut bait(perch/shad),everything else is just channel cat fishin Punch baits are worthless on jug lines unless your fishing a pond or very small lake

Stubby's aint quite Jesus FYI Lord how I've tried not to respond to your negative, put everybody down in backhanded way post-- Its been like holding back diarrhea sometimes though, what could possibly make you feel so darn superior to everyone else? Maybe you could say exactly how much of Stubby's bait have you tried before you put it down-- I would hate to be in your family, I bet thanksgiving is a real hoot around your place. Go ahead a spew your venom back at me if you want, I'm gonna go back to just being disgusted with you and not responding-- Rant over, sorry guys.

How does 6lb test handle with Channels around here? I have some leftover Spiderwire Stealth Braid and wondering if it was enough to pull in <15lb channels.

A friend of mine jug fishes a lot. He tells me his secret bait is 'lil smokies sausage. I guess you can bait your hooks and snack at the same time.

Live shad would be a great bait but I have trouble keeping them alive long enough for that, if you can it will be very good bait. Most of us use cut shad on the rod and reel so I bet that would work good for you also.

I agree with Steve, cut shad works great on jugs as your main go to bait. But as mentioned don't be afraid to try other baits .

Another newbie question, when you tie hooks off the drop line, what length line do you use?
Should the hook be about 6 inches from the drop line?

I use at least 12-18" of drop line connected to the main line with a swivel. You don't want the catfish to catch the main line when it starts spinning.
