So I have recently acquired a commander 140 and i am trying to make sure i store this thing properly. I have a pulley system in place in the garage from previous kayaks that i would like to use. For some reason wilderness systems recommends storing the commander hull side down. They only recommend this for the commander and recommend the opposite for all their other models. Everything I have read recommends storing kayaks upside down specially if using straps or cross braces. I can't imagine it would be ok for me to store this thing right side up with straps hanging from the ceiling. Any ideas ? Do I need to abandon the pulley system and give up some floor space?

I can't imagine why they wouldn't want it stored upside down but if you want to follow their advice, could you get a piece of plywood and use that with the pulleys - store the yak hull side down on the plywood.
And congrats on the commander - always liked those boats.

I remember that warning that came with my 140... It seems odd that they don't want it stored on the gunnels, but I trusted that they include that for good reason. I have plenty of floor space and that's where it's been for three years: flat, hull side down... Haven't had any problems and I have fished that yak hard...

Hmmm...I don't know bout plywood but I might have to just include some lateral support between the straps....
What about car topping... You gotta go hull up then right? Right?

I use a bed extender and just load it hull down myself, but I would not worry about car topping. I have loaded it upside down several times on other guys' racks without any issues. I think what they're concerned about is long term storage and the hull deformation that can happen over time... If you're uncertain give Wildy a call and ask.

I've had my Commander 140 for 2 years, and Gutcheck has had his longer. I never turn mine upside down for storage or transport. Ever. I haven't seen any deformation of any kind any where on the hull.
BTW, congratulations on you purchase. I bet you'll have it for a long time.

Thanks for the input guys.
Art, are transporting in a pick up? I have to car top on my 4runner with cross bars. Thinking upside down would be best for transport this way. But I may shot WS an email and see what they have to say.

I do have a pickup that I carry it in when it's just me. I have a 5 kayak trailer that I carry it on also. I think I would still carry it upright on top of a vehicle, but that may depend on how far apart the cross bars are.
