We just got back from a little vacation in Colorado & New Mexico. I thought I would share a little of it with all of you.

Wanted to do a little fly fishing in the mountains of Colorado. The day we had the guide hired it was raining in the mountains. So the guide took us down to the Navajo Lake in New Mexico where the weather was nicer. We fished the tail waters of the San Juan River behind the dam. It is a catch and release area. The guide did not want us to handle the fish so he is in all the pictures instead of us. Even though we did not get the great mountain views while fishing it was a great day.

We also took a train ride through the mountains. The trip started at 9:00am Chama NM. The trip ended around 4:30pm in Antonito NM. From there we took an hour and a half bus ride back to Chama. It was a long day but well worth it. Seen some of the most beautiful country there is. Half way through the train ride they feed you great lunch at a depot in the mountains. They also serve drinks (non alcoholic) and snacks on the train. For information go to:
Train Ride

The last picture was taken of a scenery in Wolf Creek Pass close to Pagosa Springs where we stayed.
If you have never been to the mountains when the trees are changing colors you are missing out. It is a beautiful thing to see and well worth the trip.

what a great trip! i just love those old steam engines. my dad & grandpa are volunteers who help with the upkeep/maintenance of an old steam locomotive just outside of metamora, in.

back when they let kids be kids, my dad would let me ride on top of the coal car & i would help shovel coal. by the end of the trip, i was black as pitch with the soot smile of course, my dad had to dress me up in a matching engineer's overalls complete with the pin-striped hat. it was a grand ole time! smile

thanks for sharing the pics!

I've only been during ski season, but after seeing these there is no doubt the family will do a summer trip next year.

Thanks for sharing your pictures!

If you can swing it, go anytime from the middle of September to the middle of October. That is when the color change of the trees are at their peak. If you have school age kids it may be hard to do. It would still be beautiful during the summer, but you will not have all the different colors.
That last picture makes a really awesome wallpaper. If want to try it just right click on the picture.

Great photos. I made a trip to Montana this year, another beautiful place with great flyfishing, I highly recommend it.

Good Pics...Thats a Great tailwater fishery @ San Juan.I Lived in Albq for a number of years. With very little bass fishing in NM I had to adapt to fly fishing. If ya'll have never fished it. 20 " trout
on flies in 18-24 sizes is very challenging.almost as hard as fighting the crowds you see up there now.
Thanks for the pics!!!

You are right about it being challenging. Fishing with 2# line.Size 26 barb less hooks it took about five minutes to get each fish in. You start feeling the strain in your arm after about two minutes. I had one break off after fighting him for about eight minutes. The guide got close enough to see him and said he was about 23. Hope to do this again next year.
