What would be the best way to secure a yak in the bed of a truck while staying at a hotel for a few days? A smallish chain through a scupper hole and tie down points on the truck?

I use a long cable if i take my yak out of town. I weave it and wrap it and tangle it up as best as i can. Pluss i spiderweb rachet straps all over it too. At best is a pain in the rear for a theif.

If you're on the ground floor and have exterior doors I'd bring it into the room. If not, a long cable through the scuppers, reversing up against to hotel wall, and under a light is the next best thing.

Bolt cutter to the padlock is even easier.
The goal with chains/cables is to keep honest people honest; a thief will take irregardless.

Get a ground floor room, and bring your kayak into the room. If they won't give you a room on the ground floor, go to another hotel.

Use what 5wtflyfisher does and check your straps before driving off; sometimes when the thief sees that the cable will take too long to defeat, he/she will cut your straps and leave. Seen it before.....
The cable in those is harder to cut than a padlock. It can be done, but 98% of the thieves are not going to take that much time.
The only 100% effective deterrent to kayak theft is to stand guard on it 24/7.

I guess bolt cutters are better than a sawsall!!

I've never stayed at a hotel with a kayak(s). But I have stayed with the bass boat, and I took everything out of the boat that was removable and brought it in the room. EVERYTHING.

You might ask hotel front desk the best lighted place to park with security camera.

Well no outside doors and I don't think I could get them in the room even if they said "sure" so I guess it's a well lit place with cables and straps.
