Make sure your fish is still alive before "shucking it"! 30 SECONDS longer and I dont waste any meat(or as much) It also helps not to keep little baby fish

That's the first time I've seen that technique. I'll remember that if I ever get some small cats.

I sometimes get into a bunch of small ones and end up throwing them back because I feel they aren't worth messing with. That method just may mean the death to a whole bunch of small cats.
Thanks for posting!

Amen to that! Legal length is starting to mean something all the sudden.

Those little 12 to 14 inchers are real sweet meat in the frying pan. I love catching monsters but if I'm looking to do a big fish fry I'll head over to my favorite spot, drop some soured cottonseed to stir them up, and catch little ones on a ultralite rod with stink bait all night long. Them little ones are fun as heck on a light rig too. Between me and the kids we can come away with a couple of limits in 4 hours or so and end up with 20lbs of fillets to feed a small army (or my inlaws.)

My inlaws are not obese, but I do enjoy catching any type of fish in any scenario. I hope to fill my boat up with 2-10 pounders so I can use both cleaning methods on my next trip. 14,254 posts? You're the f'n man!!!!!

Think I'll pass on the catfish shucking. I can fillet a limit of eaters in 10-12 minutes with my plain ol Dexter Russel knife.

Many many moons ago when i wuz a 10 year old kid, I watched an older wiser gentleman clean channel cat on Lake Buchannan in a similar way. Ceptin his way was even faster. He took a knife and cut up from the vent hole to fins. Made a small cut on each side up from end of vent cut, grabbed the catfish by head and other hand on the body with thumb on back bone where that fella made the cut thru backbone. In one quick back snap motion he broke off head at thumb/backbone and pulled head straight down towards tail. Skin came off with guts and catfish was cleaned. Took me way longer to type this than it took him to clean a small channel. Very similar technique but he didn't run the knife along the backbone. He made the vent cut which is easier, faster & safer IMHO especially with a sharp knife.

Interesting, I may need to try that one of these days. I don't think I will be keeping the tail though...
