Over here you hear scary stories about being shot for accidentally stepping onto someone's lawn or ending up in deathrow for all kinds of stuff.
What is real?

false herman. i will only shoot you if u break in my house. i will hang you if you steal any of my cows. yes in texas it is still a hanging offense for that. but it aint practiced. true in USA murders get 5-10 years druggies get 20-life. (exagerated) but you can get death row for killing someone in a car accident. if you are at fault. i can be sued and tossed in jail if i shoot you for breaking in my home and you get away. asking for a kiss is sexual harrasment if it makes the person asked scared.

What is real? Herman, the truth of the matter is that in Texas, there are some of the nicest, warm hearted people on God's green earth! Someone is telling you a crocky of hocky my friend! I would be honored for you to visit my home, I would open my home up to you & be as kind to you as if you were my relative! In fact , probably moreso than some of my bum relatives! You come to my house, we will eat some genuine Texas BBQ Venison that is slow cooked in a pit fired with mesquite wood, some of my tater salad & some pinto beans with ham hocks, garlic & green onions cooked in them & sweet tea! Then, after we gorge ourselves, we will go to the river to see if we can catch some fish! Come on down, just let me know when to pick you up at the airport.
Keep your powder dry & don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!!

Very safe, Herman. Don't believe everything you hear/read. I would feel less safe in Germany--don't you guys have serious problems with radical skinheads and Neo-Nazis, not to mention radical Islams? Not jabbing at you, just making a point about the way the media skews things.

Texans are some of the friendliest people on the planet! Most of 'em will give you the shirt off their back and are great folks. I've broken down on the side of the road a few times over the past year, and I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for somebody to stop and offer help. Still, you break into my house and I will shoot you with one of my 6 guns. Maybe with 2 of 'em. Overall, just be a decent human being and you don't have to worry about it! I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world.

In Texas, tresspassors are shot. Survivors are shot again. Honestly.
I don't think that you will have any problems, if you don't steal, or curse in front of the ladies.

When you come to Texas, please bring wine with you. And if you come during the holidays, a good rum stollen would be very nice. Texas is as safe as anywhere in the US. There are neighborhoods in the major cities in which I would not feel as safe. Yes, we do differ from our European ancestors in our freedom to own and use firearms. There are things over here that can kill you, and even a very few that might eat you. Therefore, my pickup truck has a 12ga behind the rear seat. It would not be an error to assume that most of us who do spend time out in the country have a gun somewhere in the vehicle. I do not feel in the least threatened by that. If your visit permits, get out of the cities and out where the real people live. They are the greatest on earth.

Few states are safer than Texas in this USA.
Stay out of the really nasty looking backwoods areas, and stay out of the urban poverty-ridden sections, and you should have no problems with crime or harm to your person.
I would say that the area from College Station to Austin, and out to the Hill Country, is one of the safest swaths of land anywhere.

TL Parnell, is that Texas BBQ invitation open to us all, or just Herman? I'm hungry just reading about it over here

I live in central Texas on the Brazos river on the upper end of Lake Whitney, we are also civilized folks up here, most of the time anyways! LOL!!I am on a mountaintop overlooking the Brazos & what happens on the mountain, stays on the mountain!

Don't let towns named like "Cut and Shoot" scare you off either!! I've lived in Texas my entire life and wouldn't have it any other way!

How about GUNBARREL CITY? LOL!!! I live right behind "SOLOMON'S NOSE"! Lookit up on the internet, it has a lot of Texas history! Also Look up COLONY OF KENT, it is an interesting read, it tells a lot about Bosque County history, I also live at Kimball Bend, the old Chisholm Trail crossed the Brazos here, there is an old ghost town here too with some old rock buildings still standing! Sorry for the hijacking of this thread, just something that came to mind.
