Hey y'all I've got a couple questions for y'all on a couple of setups
Hey everyone I know I dont post much anymore but hopefully some of y'all still remember me from when I was more of a consistent poster. I do still reference this site a lot when I need info about surf fishing or salt fishing in general, Life has just been crazy recently.

So here is the situation, I've got a buddy who is really big into the whole land based shark fishing down here on the gulf coast, in fact hes grouped up with a bunch of guys who are sponsored by Landshark beer and Avet reels. That being said he is wanting to switch all his gear over to Avet (already well on his way). The other day he shot me a text saying "if you want em i've got a Seagate 30 and a Seagate 50 that I don't use that you can have, I'm trying to switch over to Avet and I figure they could use a good home" as you can imagine I jumped all over that! (he and I have been friends for a long time and this is not the first time we've swapped gear).

Anyway I picked up the reels this past monday, they needed a light cleaning and have a little pier rash on em but they are still in BEAUTIFUL shape. What i was PLEASANTLY surprised about is that they are already spooled with 30lb moss green Powerpro! the SGT30H is fully loaded (used bimini twist to yucatan knot to add 50lb shock leader).......the SGT50H is not quite full but probably 3/4 full, (I also added a 50lb shocker using the same connections for this one.)

My first question is this: I tried looking at the Daiwa website to figure out the capacity for each reel with 30lb braid and have come to the conclusion that their numbers on the website are wrong. The math just does not add up, I tried 2 different line calculators and something somewhere is off, for instance I know for a fact that my Slosh 30 (same size as the seagate) has 300yds of 30lb power pro and another 200yd top shot of 20lb BBG. By the calculations I did between the reference specs on Daiwa's site and the diameter of the 30lb power pro it shows the capacity for strait 30lb braid as 454yds (less than the 500 yds of braid AND Mono on my slosh of the same size)...........so can anyone tell me the CORRECT capacity of these reels with 30lb power pro, or at least how to calculate it correctly?

My second question is: I plan on using both of these as surf reels (both seem very castable though i've only been able to make lob casts so far and not really let em fly) I was planning on leaving the SGT30H alone but was wondering if I should switch the 50 to heavier line? (I also plan on using this one for slide lining/king/pin rigging off the piers) so should I put a top shot on it? should I leave it alone and just keep the 50lb shocker on it? I really want y'alls opinions on the matter. I would just like to be ready in the case that a tarpon, king, cobia, shark, monster red, or BIG black drum shows up to munch on my bait.

Thank y'all so much for any info you can provide I really do appreciate it!

Tight Lines and God bless!

line capacity rating on reels are ususally alittle less then reality, say perhaps a spinning reel, a manufacturer will rate the line capacity max where their is alittle bit(probably 1/8 of inch left ) on the spool , this is how the reel is made to perform, but that doesnt stop people from filling the spool up to the very edge of the spool which could mean an extra 100 yards if its something as thin as 30lb braid

I can understand that but when you consider that 50lb braid is approximately the same diameter as 12lb mono and the website says the capacity for 14lb mono is higher than that of 50lb braid.....

So I did a bit more digging and cross referencing, looked at the Shimano Torium 30 which has the same line capacity as the Sgt50h after calculating the capacity of 30lb power pro it showed over 1200yds of capacity (over double what the Daiwa website shows) but as far as the setup question for the sgt50h anyone have any pointers?
