I cant catch a keeper smallmouth out of dunlap to save my life, but this one was just an inch away. Got him in the 23mph wind and 41degrees. It was brutal out there but I felt like I had to get on the water. Got a keeper bass too with soft plastics and lots of dinks/perch with live worms.

Oh yeah, water was still 61 degrees so the fish were moving around plenty.

I'm sorry to say, but by the looks of the picture I'm pretty sure that's not a smallmouth. Good time either way though I'm sure. Nice catch.

You guys might be on to something, but his jaw definitely did not extend past his eyeball. What say you to that?

Kentucky Bass/Spotted Bass jaws do not extend past the eyeball. Also the coloration is a clue since it is not the Bronze or Brownish tint or color. Also, TPWD do not list Small Mouth to be present in Dunlap. Probably it is a Guadalupe or Spotted Bass.

He did kind of have an olive bronzish coloration that distinguished him from the other LMB. I have caught tiny red eyed bronze bass in dunlap that look like smallmouths, but I have to re-evaluate that now. Thanks for the info!

I doubt that is a smallmouth, but it's possible to catch one. They come in from Canyon occasionally. I think the lake record is almost 4 pounds back in 2005. I'd like to catch one someday regardless of size. Haha. Good luck. There's always next time.

What ever it is, it's a nice one and should be very good when released in the grease. Good going for getting out in the cold and wind.
