Had some at work. a Mexican buddy of mine had brought, his was tilapia, but he claims you can do it with any fish....I'm not big on ANYTHING raw but that stuff was off the chain!!! So my question is....anyone ever had it or used crappie?

Try this! While out on the water and a few in the box. Filet one and wash with fresh bottled water, place in a zip lock bag with lime juice! Let set for 1 hour, with crackers, eat a few slices and tell us how it was. Maybe add a few drops of Louisiana Hot sauce, that's the way I roll "When Hungry".
Probing brush for crappie is my game!

It's delicious. It's not raw. The acids in the lime cure it. One of my favorite. Cilantro, avocado, and basically what you like.

There's been a few threads on this before. People always get really really sick from freshwater fish. Maybe someone will link one of the old threads.

I'm still trying to figure out what it is. I now know you eat it and it may be raw, which turns me off. Like jig man, I like my fish fried but must eat them baked and grilled. Darn doctors!

Crappie makes some of the Best ceviche. First thing after cleaning the crappie, place in freezer in plastic bags for 3 days I put them in water and add salt.(this kills any bacteria)Thaw fish rinse. 1. cut fish in small cubes 2. squeeze fresh lemon juice enough to cover the fish add salt.3. place fish in refrigerator over night (or at least 8 hrs) to cure fish in (Lemon) juice. Drain lemon juice and set fish to the side. Next in a separate bowl dice cilantro, onions, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, avacado add salt and pepper to taste. Squeeze fresh green limes (Lime) juice on mixture of veggies. Now strain all lemon juice from the fish and mix fish with the veggies and lime juice. Serve with the $2.00 corn chips just put some on a chip and there you have it. You will love it!

CAUTION YAWL .... fresh fish to be prepared in any "raw" fashion no matter where it comes from should be frozen at a certain temp for a certain amount of days before consumption .... there are some rather ugly things you could ketch not doing it properly ever seen the monster inside me thing about the crawdads ....? it dang near kilt him ...I used to prepare a lot of sushi I got a pretty good back ground on the raw fish thing no sushi can be served in the US legally without the freezing the fish for certain length of time the time depends on how cold the freezer is .... several variables on this .... NO JOKING ROUND GUYS ....CAREFUL ..... a day off on the "curing" with the RAW FRESH NEVER FROZEN fish for the ceviche could make someone very very ill
