I wanted to revisit a post I made back on 4/9/2012, inquiring about catching bullheads.
Been trying periodically for a little over a year now. I use a Frabil minnow trap and cut the holes a bit bigger. Use an inner container of either a cricket tube or a beer can with holes punched in it filled with bait. Bait usually consists of hot dogs, bread, dog food, fish food, range cubes, etc. I have tried the trap in every body of water I know. Neighborhood ponds, parks, drainage ditches, retention ponds, streams, lakes, the works. My best guess is the holes in the trap openings are too small, the bait is wrong, or I am just having bad luck with trap placement. Hopefully this thread will help others out too. Thoughts??
Y'all had some good responses, I just never had a chance to put it all to good use.
I am going to make a larger clover trap, (or buy one if anyone knows who sells moderately priced ones) and bait it with chicken per TFFer recommendations.
I still don't know of a good place to put the trap in. I will start with my usual places and hope I was just using too small of a trap.
I would be more than happy to pay someone to show me where/how..................? PM me if you want to help a guy out!!

When I was a kid, I would punch a bunch of holes in a milk jug add some rocks to make it sink, and a string on the handle to make lay on its side and to retreive it of course. Then simple tied a piece of bacon onto one of the rocks inside, chunked it in the creek behind the house. This was done with the intent to catch crawdads for bait, but more often than not I ended up with a good number of small bullheads. Usually the by catch of bullheads upset me but then I had no idea they were better catfish bait then crawdads.
Catch and release into the grease!

I am just waiting for this weather to get bit warmer . I usually catch them off creeks 5-10 on good days with worms .
I usually look for deep pool around the creeks with brushpiles ,hanging tree branches they are usually thick in there.

I used to catch them a lot in the Spring by a creek under the bridge near where I lived. I'd use night-crawlers or cheap stink bait bought at a bait and tackle store. There were a lot of sucker fish and perch too.

Best Yella-Cat. bait. There is. Warms up abit. You have city pond or lake. Fish right on bottom with Chicken-Livers.
