Anyone know when this knot came to life? I looked for a link to show when some of the various knots came into play and didn't have much luck.

I think back in the 70's, my grand dad was a bass guide on Toledo Bend , and that's the only knot he would tie, he always told me that is the strongest knot to hold a big fish.

My favorite knot for everything but Flouro I also use it for everything except for flouro....I fished an FLW tournament with Stacey King....and broke off a fish using 8 lb flouro...he asked what type of line and knot I used....he then said he tested knot strengths (with an unnamed company) and they found that the palomar knot used on flour had a 80% strength...the improved trilene knot for flouro tested out the strongest....just a thought....

I remember learning to tie this knot by reading Bassmasters magazine in the early 70's not long after B.A.S.S. started. At the time it had high knot strength. I still use it today.

I use this knot 100% of the time and no issues whatsoever even on flouro. On braid I double loop it.

I use to use this knot for every line until I did a bit more research and was having problems with break offs on fluoro. Was my line twisting and in return me tying it wrong? Maybe... probably actually, but I never could figure out if it was or wasn't twisting on me. I saw a website a few years back where they use to have a show on knot testing and they proved that palomar was not the best knot to tie with fluro. I switched to a improved clinch on fluoro line and haven't had a problem since. Actually I've straightened hooks out with 20lbs fluro while using improved clinch.
That show did prove that palomar was the best knot for braid line though. It's such a simple knot I like to use it quite often.
If you ain't first you're last.
