Good morning,
I moved to Arlington, TX about 6 months ago and it's killing me that I haven't gone fishing yet. I from Virginia and have fished the Chickahominy since I was a little boy. Caught my first big one at 8 years old, 37lb 8oz. But the past 2-3 years, an average day would be a 50lb flathead or big blue.
Are there any rivers/lakes near DFW I should know about? I'm planning to move to Pilot Point in a year or two and fish at Lake Ray Roberts. I have a 18' Bass Buggy and hope to find a place to put it to good use.
I apologize if this is the wrong section. Browsed around while waiting to get activated and couldn't find a thing.

LOL You are a lucky man if big cats are what you're looking for.For starters you've got Eagle Mountain, Grapevine and Lewisville lakes real close to you all good for blues.Texoma, home of a previous world record.Tawakoni, famous for monster cats and the list goes on.There'll be a learning curve but you already got a leg up just by joining this forum.Welcome!

What bait do cats prefer down here? We'd catch big ones on live shad or eel. We'd even lay chicken liver out in the sun for a week and use it as stink bait, was good for smaller 20 pounders and channels. During the summer, we'd catch a few gar too. They are fun to fish but ruin your line and nets every time, too expensive for me to fish them. I've heard a lot about "Trinity" on Google, where is that?

Fresh dead shad cut up is definitely the best bait for the big ones. The Trinity River runs right thru the middle of Dallas.Google Earth is a great tool for locating all these spots. If you do catch a gar,cut that sucker up.That's some good bait too.

I lived up in Norfolk/ Newport News forna couple years Ever fished at the Brickyard? Or near the bridge at the Chick/James? Good times. Further up towards the lake (at the damn actually) is a nice campground. Between there and River Side seems to have a lot of gar during the Spring/Summer. We'd pull all-nighters in the Summer and early mornings in Spring/Fall. Fishing in Virginia is the best. I've never fished in a lake before. This will be my first in Texas.

Ray Roberts is not too bad of a lake. Head north to Texoma if you want to test your skills and have the chance a monster. Tawakoni is another trophy cat lake. Last year in the Cabela's King Kat tourney on Tawak there were three 5 fish stringers weighed in that all exceeded 230 lbs. You can look up thoses results. Lake Texoma at one time held the world record at 121.8 lbs. Still the Texas state record. You might want to take a trip with a good guide and it will speed up your learning process. If all you have fished is rivers then this will be a bit different. There are no mighty river systems in Texas like you are used too. A great guide and he is not too far from you is Tom known on the forum as Stinkbait Tom.

Apparently in Arlington, you are not allowed to have a boat in your driveway because it's an eye sore. I got a 30 day notice from the city.
