Thinking about getting something going in Central Texas.
Any of you all have kiddos who are currently involved in a (B.A.S.S. or FLW) affiliated High School team?

I am an advisor for a team in the SETX region. One thing I suggest is that if you start a club go the FLW/TBF route. That is the route that we took and I believe next year the NETX region will change from BASS to the FLW/TBF group also. In our region we have 5 tournaments and a championship every year. In each of the tournaments we have had this year we have had over 230 teams in each event. It is a great program with tons of potential to grow if we do it right.

Well as long as Tax Payer's money is not used for any of it. It is a good idea. But what I see the schools using funds for other things like sports stadium's instead of for books and education.

No plans to ask the Schools for anything other internal P/R assistance ie. inform students of program availability.

I have yet to see a school give any money for the Fishing programs. I know ours doesnt. It is funded by sponsor's and parents. Well as long as Tax Payer's money is not used for any of it. As a boat captain supporting the sport who had kids play organized sports in high school and college, I feel strongly that the notion of club sports needs to be reviewed. Not everyone has the athletic skills to perform in team sports or the desire to do so. That does not lessen the impact that club sports can have on building confidence, team spirit and a sense of accomplishment in our youth. Funding is tough everywhere, but nothing says that creative minds can not find ways to get more kids involved and support them.

Check this site out: http://www.highschoolfishing.org/I am in the research process of starting one in my son's school near San Antonio and the FLW route seems like a good way to go. I've met the father and son who started the team at Lake Travis High School and talked a little with Jeff Cook, who started the Faith Angler Network High School Club. So there are plenty of folks that can help. The guys who run the organization at the national level responded to my questions very quickly by just sending a message through the website. I really appreciate the goal of "education through fishing." It's not all just about fishing and competing. My oldest son is also in FFA through his school and it seems like a very similar concept....education via having the responsibility of raising, caring for, and showing animals. Good luck with it and I hope to have a team down here by the next school year.

Just to put a bug in the ear. We are all planning on getting together. The SETX region, THSBA and the FAN this summer to discuss some possibilties for next year. All 3 groups all have the same goal in mind. Education, fishing and sportsmanship. Look for Bigger and Better things coming in the near future.
All 3 are great oppurtunities for the kids, just choose the one that best suits you and your kids. I have found that anyone ,no matter what group they are in will be more than happy to help you get started. Including myself
Good Luck Ken Starling

Schools get money many different ways. This money is divided up to where the school can only purchase certain things with certain money. No school uses the "school tax" from the people of its district to purchase sports stadiums and such. They use money allocated by the state for sports, but mainly things like stadiums and such are built with booster club funds or grants. I know of no school that pays for the fishing teams. All money in my program comes from community sponsors.
