I use dog food in my minnow traps. The cheaper the dog food the better. I have baited holes with dry dog food by using old potato sacks with a brick to sink it and the same method with range cubes. I am not sure if the dog food or the range cubes attract cats but I do know it attracts the bait fish they feed on as well as carp.
At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

We used to punch holes in cans of dog food with an ice pick and set them over the side of our dock in a crappie basket, when I was a kid an living on a canal. Not sure if it attracted catfish (they were always in abundance) but we did it to attract crappie. I think minnows picked at the dog food and the crappie followed. Here on L. Palestine, range cubes are the easiest and cheapest draw for small channels.
Right now, even that doesn't work so well with surface water temps at 46 deg.

Range cubes are great. Bait as frequently as you can on days you don't intend to fish and you'll have em crawling all over the place. I wouldn't use the can method unless you plan on retrieving them.

I've tried the dog/cat food bait thing a few times. It may have worked. Or they may have already been there. Don't know. I used wet food and put it in an old panty hose with a rock to sink it. The food will dissolve and seep out through the hose.
For my money I'd use the cubes. Get a big bag at any feed store. Get the high protein content. Throw a handful or two out before you fish. Give it 30 minutes and it should attract the channels.

we put dry dog food in hose (like your wife wears) & hung them off the dock always had fish around
the best thing we used though is shelled corn just throw it in & it will sink

I use a couple of mesh bags with a brick for weight. Tie it off to a stump or a float and chunk it in. Pull it up when I leave

Yeah, definitely don't leave the dog food can in the lake when you leave. And then what are you going to do with it when you retrieve it and the gunk is seeping out of all those holes. And canned dog food isn't so cheap these days anyway. So I agree, range cubes or something that you can retrieve (mesh bag, hose...) and dispose of.

I put dog food and homemade chum in pantyhose. Tie the top and tie some sort of weight to the filled pantyhose and drop it in. If you can tie the filled pantyhose to a tree or other object on the bottom it will stay in place when the fish start the mess with it. We have had great luck doing it this way.

range cubes is better and cheaper. No weight needed and no littering issues.
