My brother in law and I are wanting to try our luck at Rockport or Lavaca this spring. We've never been there and have no idea where to go or what to do when we get there. We were wanting to "possibly" run out to a rig or a artificial reef and also do a little fishing in the bays for anything that bites. We'll be in a ZX20 bay, not sure how far you can go out in a 20 footer or if we should even attempt it. We just want to have a good time, be safe and maybe catch a few fish.
Does anyone have any suggestions on clean lodging, fine dining, and good fishing in the Rockport/Lavaca area??

Rockport and Lavaca are a long way to get to a place that you could get offshore. You would need to go to PA or POC or Freeport to get offshore. You also don't want to try to go offshore in the spring in your boat . The waves will be to big so that's not safe nor will it be fun. You will have to catch calm days in summer and early to mid fall .

launch at the south side Copano Causeway north of Rockport and fish the boat channel under the bridge. it's only a few hundred yards from the ramp.right(right under the highest spot of the bridge) Large Black drum to 80 pounds should be showing up. especially at night. Best baits are half a blue crab,Sea Lice or shrimp, fish bite combination. Also, any part of the intercoastal waterway should be holding Black drum, Trout and redfish. Be Careful in Copano bay if you are not familiar with the area. The many shallow oyster reefs can ruin your day if you are not careful.

Rockport is on a peninsula and has 7 bays to offer for your fishing venue.

Therefore, no matter which way the wind blows - you still have a place to fish !

That's a big deal when you drive along ways to get here.

I love spring time fishing and my BIGGEST fish of the year usually come in March.

X2 on fishing this spring.. April and May are great months. Fish the outer edge of Traylor island and San Joe Islands.
