I've never really tried to fish for bass before. It's usually crappie, sandies, hybrids ect.. From the bank cause i have no boat access. I did some research (youtube) yesterday on how to fish a T-rigged plastic and went to academy today and picked me up some well known ones that I've heard do pretty good. So today in this mid 30 degree weather I went to Faulkner Park just south of Tyler and tested out what I learned from youtube lol.

Took me a few tries to get the "technique" down but hey, I've got it down! This first one was caught on a brush hog, Green pumpkin i believe (Very good color for that murky water) but im sure all you guys know that. I caught 6 in an hour. Would have been 7 but i hooked onto at least a 4lber when i saw it surface, drag was set too tight and one quick jerk of her tail snapped my 8lb test.. Overall it was a nice bass day for me, now i can't wait to try fishing the main lakes with the spawn around the corner. Thanks for reading and any bassing tips for a newbie would sure be appreciated! grin

Nice fish man. I remember my first Texas Rigged bass and had about the same results as u. Fun to feel them pick it up. Try some Lake Fork Tackle - beaver tails. Pond bass love em. Okeechobee color.

Thanks Tarpon. Yeah for that first one I had my line a bit loose so I didn't really feel the pick up, I just saw my slack line tightening up and set the hook right after Lol. Still have to get used to letting the bass inhale the bait before setting the hook also. I'm pretty sure that's how a few shook off today. I'm just used to the feeling when a crappie thumps my jig then setting the hook right away. Where can i get a hand on one these lake fork beaver tails?

nice bass man. cant go wrong with plastics but mix it up with a roostertail or two. white and black with silver depending on the sun always work great. maybe a gold and some natural colors too.

ive caught all kinds of fish on roostertails

Nice fish! Congrats! Yep...loosen that drag a bit. wink I don't fish for bass much anymore, but when I used to, part of the fun was realizing just how many different variations of lures, bait, etc, will catch these things. I used to create hybrid plastic lures from cutting things in half, splicing one to the other, etc, changing blades, trailers, etc, on spinning lures, etc. Man that was fun! smile

Thanks guys! Yeah I though about picking up a Rat-L trap or 2 but I wanted to get T-rigging down first lol. They sure seemed to like that green pumpkin brush hog a lot though. & after that breakoff I loosened up my drag. a bit more, I was bummed out I didn't catch that hog. Would've been my pb man. Might try again today though.

Sounds like you got it figured out, I've caught a couple out of Faulkner but usually only one or two per outing not sure how much fish is actually in there but I never keep the bass.

Good work! Sounds like you found what they like.

Advice from a bank angler that started bass fishing in July: Don't get on the "bait train." Like you, I started with one technique (wacky-rigged Senkos). Caught some decent fish from the bank. Then I started reading, watching videos, talking to other folks, etc. Everything sounded like it was "guaranteed to catch a fish." So I spent hundreds on top waters, cranks, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, rooster tails, chatterbaits, flukes, you name it.

I would say my catch ratio and wallet went way down from those early senko days. And my frustration went up.

Luckily I met a well-regarded bank fisherman in December that showed me the light. I went back to throwing wacky Senkos and added wacky-rigged Zoom Finesse Worms to the repertoire. I probably throw this 90% of the time now and my catch ratio and fish size have gone up dramatically.

If you really want to try something different, I would also suggest a Rat-L-Trap. I throw that the other 10%, along with a Luck-E-Strike RC2 Series 3 shallow crankbait. They give you some more active fishing options (and both should be available from local Wal-Mart). The Rat-L-Trap gives you more versatility to fish all depths, but you're likely to lose a few because it sinks and gets snagged. The RC2 only dives a few feet, which can be great if you're fishing a pond with shallow grass.

Good luck!

Yessir, I still need a bit more practice & learn some more techniques to t-rig fishing. I didn't keep the bass yesterday. Most were about a pound or so. I think Faulkner has a good population of fish. Towards the top end of the lake closest to the bridge in the shallow cove area, I could see little balls of bait about 5 feet from the shoreline &the bass were coming up and striking them but I couldn't get one to bite anything I was throwing. I tried roostertails and a little 3/8 spinnerbait but nada.

Oh man that's a bummer! Yeah my plan is to just buy lures one or 2 at a time and find out what works well for meand what doesn't. But everything varies on the surroundings of water. I was actually going to grab some senkos today and try out wacky rigging! It looks really simple and productive catching some good fish. Also going to grab some Rat-L traps too. Would you recommend adding a weight twhen wacky rigging or do you just fish it weightless? Because I know weightless gives it a more natural fall but will adding a weight make a difference? By the way thanks for the advice micheng!

Glad to help.

I only fish my wacky rig weightless -- even for the super light finesse worm. I have a friend that uses weighted wacky jigheads (Zappu or similar) with good success.

For the Senkos, I use the rubber o-rings with a Gamakatsu weedless finesse EWG hook (the one with the nylon weed guard). I started with 2/0 size, but have downsized recently to Size 1 hooks. Some buy the o-ring tool to slide on the rings. I stole the bottom half of one of those 4-color click pens (kind with red, black, blue and green ink typically) from my daughter.

Before the o-rings, I started wacky rigging with my daughter's clear hair ties from CVS/Walgreens. They come 100 to a pack. Three loops on the pen and slide it on. Pros: they are clear, cheap and allow for hook to be perpendicular to bait. Cons: they are not as sturdy as the o-rings and they dissolve after a few hours (I'm guessing from the Senko's salt).

With the finesse worm, I use a Gamakatsu Size 1 drop shot hook. Hook through the worm right below the "egg sack." Check worm integrity often as it will tear. Rehook down a few centimeters as needed. I've done tests by sliding on a 1/4" of heat shrink and hooking through the shrink. Pros: More sturdy. Cons: Fish may be more wary.

Hope this helps.
