I took the boat out the other day for the first time in a couple months and when I put it back in the garage, I noticed a small puddle of oil right below the prop. I checked it out and saw a trail of oil running down the side of the lower unit from a little seep hole near the top. It wasn't a lot but certainly enough to worry me since I've never seen that before.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Could it just be a seal and perhaps easy to repair?

My motor is a 1996 Mercury 175hp EFI. It's been a great motor for me but now I'm worried.

Any suggestions on what I should do? If you have a reputable repair shop in the Dallas area, I'd love some suggestions.

Thanks!

Not to alarm you but I had a similar experience with my Evinrude. After the last time I took it out, I noticed a small oil sheen running down my lower unit. I parked it at the lake house for a few weeks and came back up this weekend only to find my lower unit BUSTED because it had water in it and the hard freeze cracked it just like a water pipe... Better to get it checked out ASAP than to be in my situation!

Oil coming out of that hole indicates the main shaft seal is leaking.
