I personally don't use live bait. I certainly understand why people want to catch their own bait. Some bait shops are getting ridiculous with their prices for bait. You used to be able to get small, medium, or large minnows. Now they just bunch them all together to make more money by giving you less for the price they charge. So it doesn't bother me that people are netting shad.

I would say focus energy on those netting game fish with nets during spawn and leave the bait gatherers alone. --cut--.... I would strongly suggest that anybody caught doing this be turned into the game wardens immediately. that is Exactly what happened... I was out at RC last spawn and there were some guys netting sandbass.. Warden was called and things were handled....
I only fish on days that end in Y!

Few years back, when the zebra mussel first started spraying in lake Texoma, the shads population took huge hit due to lack of food. The stripers i caught along the shore line by the Dam were scary skinny, bony. That year, lots, lots stripers, including big ones, 20#, 25# were starving to death.
Moon, this wouldn't be around the same time we had that bout of cold weather that completely decimated the shad population in Texoma would it? You know, just a few years ago. Virtually all of the shad in Texoma died. And yes this was hard as the devil on the striper for several years afterward. Somehow though thanks to a little stocking by TPWD and the little shads need to breed the lake is in good shape again as far as its shad population. Maybe not back 100% where it was.....but I mean come-on.....they all died. There are fish kills every year on Texoma...usually caused by low oxygen levels in the summer. Moon you know all this. Why am I even posting this? Ohh, one other thing. If you'll tell me where I can buy live shad in my area I'll sure send some business their way....... I eagerly await your reply

Thumbs down. Do you have any scientific evidence of people depleting the bait sources? This thread should go over nicely... He doesn't but there is some refuting this falsehood. Local biologist said there's pretty much nothing we could do fishing to hurt or help the rough fish population. Moronic theory.
I hate fishing and texas, but love tff.

The last thing we need is spending more money for bait. ....I'm not sure which lake you is not catching but , I catch them every time I go out fishing. Weather it is summer or winter. I personally think is the drought that make it hard to catch shad, especially from bank. And most creek don't even have water now, unlike a few year back. So the answer is NO for your question.

I fish the barge since 1988. The barge fishing has its up and downs. Lots of baits in the wells make fishing really tough. But if you saw lots of baits outside, under the lights, that would be a very welcome sight. You would be able to catch crappies, sandies, hybrids, bass.
