Then please help me and my buds figure out what these green returns are.

We both mark it, usually green is brush or weeds, but that's not it.

And ideas? Thanks

Don't know without testing it on what I know is down there.

- Get on some rocky bottom and check out the color it gives you.
- Then try mud bottom to see the difference.
- Get over a Hydrila bed also and check it out.

Those are the only 3 thing I want to know. Rocks turning to mud bank and the Hydrilla.

Fished a football jig for sure a rock to muck transition there

But most of it is muck but shows dark brown...maybe this is much softer muck?

Plankton bloom, from soft to hard bottom that mossy stuff that blooms with plankton.

Colors represent density changes. Nothing more than reflections of sound off objects. Harder reflections equals more defined density/color. Muck/silt would be slightly more dense than vegetation

This is correct. Check your Lowrance booklet to see which colors are used for a hard object and which ones are for softer objects.
How you have the color set up on your unit will make a difference also. Just because it is green on your screen does not mean that it is grass or vegitation in the water.

My guess is algae or plankton bloom of some sort. The red and yellow in there indicate denser areas. If it were a bottom reading I would expect to see more solid yellow with a red base. I'm assuming the brown is the strongest readings which indicates bottom.

The way I read your graph from the pics is from weakest to strongest: blue, green, yellow, red then brown. But it's hard to tell exactly not knowing your settings.

I get a lot of green returns on my 4X and have yet to figure out what it means/is. The other day on a creek after recent rains in 15-20 fow I had a solid green return at around 10-13' (3' thick) for 3/4 mile. The cast net brought up a few shad which I'm thinking was the red and yellow specs within the green. So maybe silt or something stirred up from the flowing water?? My manual says a wide, bright yellow return is the hardest. A narrow reddish-blue is the softest. The colors in between are mysteries to me.

You need to know what color pallet you are using. What that will tell you is if the green is a hard return or a soft return. From the looks of it Green may be a hard return and blue is a soft. Check your manual and read about the color pallets.

I can't recall the manual for my 4X saying anything about having different pallets or what other colors mean other than yellow being a hard return and reddish-blue a soft return. It does have this adjustment under "sonar options" that'll let you swap from "white w/bottom track", "blue w/bottom track", "white w/fish reveal", "white background" etc. but the manual mentions nothing of return colors than yellow and reddish blue that I can find.
