We have not been infected w/ Zebra Mussels yet. It's probably a matter of time though. If you have fished some of the popular area lakes in the last couple weeks, Lewisville, Lavon, Ray Bob, Ray Hubbard, Worth, Pool, Belton, Texoma... (I have put an attached list) you must disinfect your boat before coming. This is a very lengthy process and hopefully you have started it 10-15 days in advance. Inboards are expensive..bout $150 to have the engine flushed. Outboards must be totally flushed, and boat needs to be cleaned with 140 degree water. Tricky part is they must be air dried a minimum of 10-15 days. So, if you have visited these lakes (the way I understand it) you cannot place your vessel on a non-contaminated lake for this amount of time. I have a buddy from Texoma who recently fished down here and it cost him $155 to have his boat cleaned...and he had to have it air dry for almost 2 weeks. Make sure you keep receipts of any flushing you have done and keep logs of when and how you flush your boats coming from lakes infested w/ Zebra mussels. Obviously this applies to more lakes than just Twok, but i've noticed we have tripled in traffic over the last few weekends and there are a few tourneys held here over the nxt few weeks. And, I know Parks n' Wildlife will be at the weigh-ins this year collecting data on blue catfish. Here is more info, and a couple of good videos here as well: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/releases/?req=20130307c

There was an article last week that they were found or their DNA present in fork and Twok. Still doesn't hurt to flush and drain!!!

This is from TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE website:
"TRANSPORTING ZEBRA MUSSELS IS ILLEGAL
Possession or transportation of zebra mussels in Texas is a Class C misdemeanor for the first offence, punishable by a fine of up to $500. Repeat offenses can be elevated to a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000, jail time up to 180 days, or both.
To comply with this law, anglers and boaters in 17 counties are required to take all reasonable steps to drain all water from their vessel, including live wells, bilges, motors, and any other receptacles or water intake systems. This applies to all types and sizes of boats usedon public waters in Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Fannin, Grayson, Hood, Jack, Kaufman, Montague, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Stephens, Tarrant, Wise, and Young counties."
REASONABLE STEPS ie: if you can't let it dry for a week, take it to a car wash

This also from TPW website:
CLEAN
Clean your boat, trailer and gear by removing all plants, animals and foreign objects. DRAIN
Drain all water from the boat, including the motor, bilge, livewells and bait buckets, before leaving the lake. DRY
Dry the boat and trailer for a week or more before entering another water body. If unable to let it dry for at least a week, wash it with a high-pressure washer and hot (at least 140-degree), soapy water.
At least a week, not 10-15 days

Yeah, it's really inconvenient. I have a customer coming down to Twok to do a sonar trip who fishes Lewisville weekly.
He can't have the boat in the water (Lewisville) at least a week before he comes.
There was 2 guys coming down from Texoma last week but couldn't come because their boat had been in the in the lake (Texoma) the day before.

so you have to do all that to your boat every time it leaves an infected lake and you are going to another lake?

How are they going to track boat movement from one lake to the next? I hope fishermen / boaters will have enough concern to police themselves and do what is right but we all know there will be those that don't care and think the rules do not apply to them.

Sounds like you are more worried about pressure on your guide business! I think all the fisherman are concerned with all our natural resources. Truth be know i would not be surprised if they are already in Twok. Just like they where found in a lot of the surrounding lakes. On the general rules on TPW it says all water must be drained from vessel and on-board receptacles. Can not imagine someone not draining there boat when you have single digit and below freezing temps!!! I personally did not see anywhere that it said disinfect.? You are blessed to be able to fish twok as a business so don't try and spoil it for the weekend anglers enjoy such a Great Lake or others running an occasional trip on Twok. The pressure comes on goes in the lake but truth be known you have probably hurt the lakes resources more do to the shear number of fish you and your clients harvest from it on a daily basis from post I have seen. By running all your trips on it.

What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!
