I live in san antonio and get my reels serviced at Matt's Reel Repair. This guy takes apart reels for a living so I got to talking to him about what kind of spinning reel I should get. He said that at any price range, shimano is probably the best value for a spinning reel.

Pretty hard to beat a Pflueger President for 60 bucks!

Don't know if it's the best, but I have had several. My favorite by far has been the daiwa lexa....love this reel.
