When walking the bank of a lake like Bachman or White Rock, how much gear do,you bring? I know a couple of rods, some hooks and weights but I'm interested in how many plastics ( do you bring an assortment of worms, creatures, craws) and some crank baits ( how many?), and some jigs, and some spinnerbaits, etc.? Or do you go for a technique specific trip like just all plastics or just all cranks?

I take just what you said. For plastics, I stick with main colors, craws and baby brush hogs. Couple spinnerbaits and an asst of hard baits. All carried in a Plano fanny pack. Usually 2 rods.

The decision is really hard, because you want to bring the kitchen sink with you. I crappie fish mostly, have a little tackle bag with 3 plastic boxes and 2 rods. Have 1 or 2 things for Bass fishing.

I carry a small back pack with two plano boxes, 2 rods and a minnow bucket. If I know I will be moving alot I will only bring one rod.

My limited choices of fishing waters makes it pretty easy for me. I carry one rod and leave the spare in the car just in case of a big tangle, and cary two small six-compartment boxes that fit in my pockets. One with grubs/jigheads and one with spoons and spinners. That's enough for the sunfish and small bass I encounter.

When I walk the banks, I'm usually only targeting a certain species of fish so I build a temporary tackle box of everything I think I'll need for the trip. I leave the store at home.

When I was younger and used to walk StillHouse I walked around with at least 35 lb.s of gear not including rods. Now I learned to trim it down to 2 rods and a backpack with a few boxes I put together based one what I'm fishing for and other conditions. For lure colors or types you can never go wrong with using natural colors, sizes and actions. I almost always carried a few different types of lures rather than bringing ONLY spinnerbaits or crankbaits etc. I found the more focused my lure selection was the harder I fished before deciding to change lures and/or techniques.

I then keep all my soft plastics in their original packagings. Lighter and more mobile is better

I also have learned to travel lighter for bank fishing. If I am creek fishing, I will carry a back pack and two Shimano adjustable tackle boxes. If I am fishing easier areas, or managed ponds and lakes, I will carry a trapper keeper. Its great having everything organized, divided, and labeled. I carry two rods unless I am creek fishing.
Can one become a master at fishing? Pshh... yes...
