Ok is it just me or have the fish gone further south for the winter? I've spoken to a few people from the golden triangle all the way down to Cameron La. I get the same story.....fish aren't biting. When I go to my favorite spots which is usually filled with people fishing there is no one out. Is the month of January a bad month to fish? Need some feedback please!

I have heard great reports on good days and a few fish here or here on bad. The fish have been staying on deep reefs this winter since it's been colder than normal. Tides been out too, so that's forced them out of the shallows and near shallows.
They are there. Fish between fronts...not during the cold air mass.

We had no problems this sunday in sabine pass, big drum, reds and sheepshead were all biting hard. Everything was caught on dead shrimp or live mud minnows. I had one red hit on a chicken boy shrimp lure. we fished the ship channel so its real deep no problems getting fish most were too big to keep.

About how deep of a reef should one fish? More than 5 feet? more than 20 feet? I may have a chance again to kayak West Bay this coming Saturday (last Saturday was cancelled due to work) The problem is, it'll be about 1-2 days after this next cold front hits

Front is suppose to hit Thursday... be chilly and calm sat, with a little south on sunday, and with another cold front on Sunday after midnight..(technically monday am). Under those conditions the trout will typically stay out since the tide will be out.
redfish aren't as finicky as trout and if you find some shell and mud even if its low tide (2 feet of water) then there could be some reds, maybe a big trout. But most of the trout will be out in 6 - 10 feet mud near oyster, Channels in 6+, and same for rivers, or basins.

yep - now is the time when you can get some easy trout limits on deep shell, ... well if you know where those deep shell reefs are.
Working the edges the reefs - where the mud meets the shell can be very productive in winter time , either drifting over that area or anchored up if you know where the edge of the reef is. I GPS the edges of reefs as standard operating procedure when logging reefs.
