Hello everyone! I'm a newbie here and looking for some advice. Here's the deal - I'm from Minnesota and my cousin just moved to the Austin, Texas area in November. She invited me to come visit her this summer so I thought I'd bring my kayak with me and do a little fishing while I was there. I was also thinking about camping since my cousin lives in a tiny two bedroom apartment with her husband and her 2 year old daughter and it would be cramped if I stayed there. Plus, I love camping whenever I get a chance. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good campground near Austin. Also, where is the best fishing near Austin? Thanks!

FYI: I'm planning to visit in early June.

No experience with lakes around Austin, but the Texas State Park system is pretty nice campgrounds. Sites equipped with elect, and water, plus tent pad, fire pit and picnic tables for around $15/day.

I here Inks lake and Perdanales Falls are great places to camp.

San Marcos is just south of Austin. The San Marcos River is pretty good fishing and there are two good campgrounds,

My vote would go to Inks Lake State Park.

No camping but kayak fishing seems to be big on Lady bird Lake.

Most of the campgrounds we've looked at around there have been based around rivers.

We stayed at Pedernales falls. Very nice but its a good hike to river access. Check out the TPWD website they do a good job of listing the amenities and you can search by map to make it a little easier.

Summer time campling can be brutal here in Texas, but Inks Lake State Park is awesome for that time of year. The water that feeds that little like comes out of the bottom of the lake dam just above that lake, and it's cold water coming from the bottom of the lake. A light breeze in the summer coming accross that lake makes it so nice. The scenery is beautiful and the fishing is OK. There is a small State Fish Hatchery nearby that you have to go and visit if they have not closed it down yet. I stopped by there and their was an intern who took me and family for a little private tour and it was so neat.
