A tough day on Texoma. Water temperatures are still in the low to mid forties. Fish are a bit sluggish.
If I were a fish, I’d be sluggish too.
Launched at High Port about 12:30 p.m. or so.
Dennis Curtis had given me some tips so I intended to head out his way. But I just can’t ever pass the island cut throughs out from Mill Creek.
Pulled up in 49 feet of water and screen pretty much blacked out. Problem was it was all bait…….there is no bait shortage at Texoma from what I can see.
Set up a drift with four dead stick rigs. I’ve given up on counting “pulls”. Folks laugh at me for trolling so much but due to my trolling addiction, I have some nice line counter reels. Abu 6500LCs are nice reels.
Bait was from 25 feet to the bottom. Set one rod at 25, one at 30, one at 35 and one 3 cranks off the bottom. Drifted for about 15 minutes with no bumps. Amazing sitting there watching that much bait go under the boat but no hits.
Bait cleared out and I was staring at a blank screen. I noticed some birds off the point at Mill Creek and was sitting there contemplating a move……blank screen…..
WHAM!!! First hit of the day rewarded me with a 30 inch striper. I’m thinking that this is more like it.
Set up another drift almost exactly on top of the previous trail. No fish.
Moved over to the Mill Creek point and set up a drift. Wind picked up. Threw out drift sock to get a nice 0.3 mph drift. Set out the four rods again at the same staggered depths. Had several taps on the “special” dead head I had painted up.
I was using a ReAxtion 1.0 dead head but painted chrome with a black back, red nose, and orange holographic eyes. I was using a white ice fluke that I had “mated” with a bubble gum. Result was a white ice fluke with pink spots. When you soak your flukes in shad spray before you go out, use caution as some of the colors will bleed.
Drifted there for an hour. Bummer, no fish. Dennis and Clayton came up and we visited a bit. JD Lyle flew by and chastised me for not having my radio on. I don’t do radio. If ya wanna talk to me, call me.
Dennis and Clayton left and I headed up to Buzzard Point. Didn’t mark anything so I ran up into the cove east of the point. Marked fish in 29 feet of water HUGGING the bottom. Picked up a few small fish on a ReAxtion 0.75 horse head tipped with a 6 inch white grub. I always tip the plastics with Spike It gamefish scented dye. No garlic for me.
Getting towards 5 p.m. so I went out into the river channel straight out from High Port. Set up a drift and caught at 24 incher on the chrome/black dead head.
All in all a great day on the water. Beautiful day that the Lord blessed us with. I think the water temps are still a bit chilly for any “slam bam” day but patience and a lot of drifting will land some nice fish. The bites are not really “bites”. They are very LIGHT taps. If you feel a tap, set the hook otherwise they are GONE.
Gotta get out lure orders tomorrow but will be out again on Tuesday. We need some rain but we also need some warming trends.
