I have a 2006 mercury 225 hp optimax and the censor is beeping at me. Just one short beep and it's not consistent. Sometimes when I'm just idling or going slow, hasn't beeped when on plain. Any suggestion?

It may be getting hot. My Optimax gets real hot when I idle. If you have a smart craft gauge check the temp when that happens.

Sounds like it's overheating. Have you ever had the water pump impeller changed. Even though there may be water coming out (pissing) the pressure of the flow may be way down if you impeller is worn.

Go to your owners manual and it will tell you what different 'beeps' mean for your model Merc. I suspect it's running hot but, manual will tell you for sure and if it is overheating, change your impeller as suggested above. It's easy and inexpensive insurance if you have any mechanical aptitude at all.

It may or may not be the impeller. Mine does it even in the winter with a new impeller if I idle too long.

Censor? Does that mean it is using foul language in front of the kids?

The beep could also be from the water/fuel seperator. If it gets full it will beep just a little like you are discribing.

Check the small oil reservoir on the motor. Mine was doing that and it was just the reservoir being a little too low and letting the float drop in the reservoir.

DW, you have a great point.
I did the same thing but, I had a new impeller I planned to change out anyway so dropped the lower unit and pulled the impeller only to find some mud and the impeller looked real good. I didn't have the whole kit and noted that the [censored] I had sucked up into the motor had scored the plate the impeller rids on. Wasn't too bad so went ahead with the new impeller.
I didn't have enough restriction to get the overtemp beep but, suspect I would have if not for cleaning it up.
With our low ramps, it's easy to get some mud sucked up into the lower unit and can cause some serious problems if you don't clean it out.

I'd guess overheating too. If you haven't put in a water pump kit at least every other year you should. It's always a good idea to get the kit that contains not only the impeller but the upper pump housing with stainless steel liner installed, as well as gaskets and lower unit oil plugs.

Also, at least once a year look for corrosion and fouling at the thermostats, or every six months if you are using your motor in brackish water. The thermostat housings are on the top of each head. Be careful not to damage the special rubber seals.
