Went yesterday and fished from 9:30-3:00. tough day. Water temp was 53 degrees and wind was very light.

Good news caught 4 fish on a jerkbait.

Bad news is they were catfish....(this lake is loaded with cat's)

If anyone has an idea how to catch a largemouth please help. I take my 13 year old son or Dad fun fishing and we just need a few bites to stay entertained.

Maybe try a slow sinking worm with no weight.

It's amazing how so many years ago Conroe was the lake out in the woods where bass were plentiful and the big names of the day made their name catching huge stringers.

Now Conroe is one of the toughest lakes in Texas to catch bass. With that said, 30+ lb. stringers are still possible on Conroe and there will be some that heavy weighed in this year.

Keep hittin' it and you'll learn Conroe.

One word...Brush Piles. You find the brush, you will find some fish. Whether they are over 16 inches is another story. Docks too. Even in the cold water, you can find some underneath those docks and even more so now that the lake is only a foot low.

I must admit I have some sick obsession about figuring Conroe out. It has been challenging. I think it makes me a better angler. Good thing is I dont have to worry about size limit because I just fun fish. I have to go to Fayette every once in a while to prove to myself that I'm not that bad after all. smile

I used to fish Conroe a lot. It's a tough lake to pattern but for some reason I really liked the lake. There are certainly a lot of big bass in there. Stick with it; it'll all come together for you.

It seems that in order to be successful on Lake Conroe you ahve to find brush piles. Pretty sad considering how big this lake is. When I first moved over here, I could go to the back of Caney Creek and fish lily pads and/or grass. I could go to Lake Paula and flip for bedding bass in the vegetation. Long gone.

I'm assuming that you have a sonar unit in your boat. Turn it on and run out the creek from your launch point. Watch the unit and note the zone where most of the activity is occurring. Let's say it's 16 to 22 feet, for example. Now head to some structure (points, humps, ledges, channel breaks, etc.) that intersect that depth. Now look for cover (brushpiles, stumps, etc.) on that structure. If you are marking bait you are in the right place. With experience you will learn to recognize that when the bait is relating to cover or structure in a certain way, your chances of scoring will increase.

Remember that you are painting only a small area with your sonar; you don't need to see fish to know that they are there. If you want a easy suggestion on Conroe, look at your lake map and find the tram, which runs from the north side of the mouth of Caney Creek to the northeast corner of the FM 1097 bridge. Idle a zigzag course along it. You will notice that it has deep water on both sides and a lot of cover; some natural (timber and stumps) and some manmade (brushpiles). Look for baitballs holding in and immediately adjacent to cover, or suspended just alongside the hump. Drop a jig, a dropshot rig, or (my favorite) a good jigging spoon and find out how they want it. You will catch a lot of white and yellow bass, crappies, catfish, and bass doing this. Many of the bass will be big bass (I consider 8+lbs. to be big, for clarification). As you develop a feel for this type of fishing you will learn to recognize other, less-known spots with potential as you run the lake. Always pay attention to that sonar unit!

I rarely fresh water fish any more, but when I fished Conroe just about every area of structure with potential (and some without so much potential) had been liberally adorned with brushpiles. They are easy to find; you just have to do your homework. You can find shallow fish under the right conditions this time of the year, but day in and day out, when the water temps are in their current range, you will catch more (and bigger) bass working deeper structure. As you get a feel for it you can start putting out your own brushpiles on your own spots. Good Luck!

Thanks Jim Ford for the advice. The dry spell is over. Took my lucky charm (daughter) and caught 3 fish today. Good news is I had a 7.5 lbr!!!!! also a 3 lbr. The only fish I caught were in 16-20ft of water. I would post pic's but I dont know how.

Hey Gman. To post photos, they must first be loaded to a host site, like FB, or photobucket, Instagram, etc....I use a combo of FB and Photobucket. Once you load the photo to the host site, you copy the link. In FB, it's usually from a right click, and in PHOTOBUCKET, link options are to the right of the picture.

BUT, not only do you copy the link, you have to put the following before, and after the photo, and do NOT leave any spaces.

If you use Photobucket, you the "DIRECT LINK" option, as other links will also be offered, but they will not display your photo. Before hitting "SUBMIT", hit "PREVIEW" to make sure the actual photo displays, and not just the link.

This should help. If not, it's also covered in the FAQ section.....CONGRATS on the 7+....Nice job!!
