Here's an update for those interested in river access and usage This past fall, we conducted surveys and found that people wanted more ways to take action on rivers in their area (no surprise!). Tangible ways for you to make an impact is NOR's focus for 2014, and here's the first release: Sending river law information packets to the government agency (or person) of your choice. What do the packets include? NORs groundbreaking resources: the poster & handout ( http://www.nationalrivers.org/river-law-handouts.html), Public Rights on Rivers book, and topped off by a NOR letter explaining the urgency of implementing and sharing this information with other law enforcement and locals. Learn more about this option by reading the blog, http://www.nationalrivers.org/river-law-info-packets.htmlWe made a new page to go with this new option, showing where info packets have been sent. Check it out at http://www.nationalrivers.org/packets-sent.htmlIts a dramatically different approach from what youve probably heard before, but if youre ready for change, take your stand and work with NOR to make it happen. Be empowered--help make rivers in your area and in our nation be "forever free." Look forward to teaming up!

Hey National, welcome back. You asked me for some info on the city of Dallas's laws regarding Whiterock Lake on your last thread a while back. I wanted to make sure you saw my response. I'm certain you will find this section of City Code to be as appalling as I do. Dallas city code. Man they are stepping all over our rights to access with this arcane nonsense.

Dear Dave, We focus on public rights to navigate, fish, and swim on rivers that are physically navigable, to go from one place to another, and therefore legally navigable under federal law. It doesn't sound like Whiterock Lake would qualify. Would any rivers flowing through Dallas qualify? Numerous cities around the country have similar bans on swimming in lakes and ponds and rivers within the city, which is unfortunate, particularly during hot weather, but they seem to see it as a public safety problem. It seems that the only recourse would be to ask city council members to change the law so as to allow the public to wade and swim in the waters within the city. -Eric
